Llangwm 7 Cefneithin 9
Llangwm came within a whisker of claiming a home win against high-riding Cefneithin, who are top of the table with five wins and a draw after six outings in Division Seven (West) - but finished the match with 13 men after trying to use intimidatory tactics against a Wasps side which refused to be brow-beaten and could well lay claim to being unlucky as they scored the only try of the game in the first half but had penalties awarded against them which allowed experienced Cefneithin fly half Jason Matthews to slot three kicks from seven attempts.
Three of them came in the opening eight minutes but Matthews was unable to find the target with his left boot before Llangwm settled and used the lineout expertise of Andrew Evans and the energy of Tim Pounder, Lewis Woods and Richard Scriven to gain a first foothold in Cefneithin territory after 16 minutes, when winger Alec Williams and Pounder went close.
There was a worrying moment for the Wasps when a Matthews cross-field kick was knocked on by Martyn Thomas but Darren Brick did well to recover - and pop up at the other end after 25 minutes when Scriven moved up to prop to nullify some Cefneithin skulduggery in the front row, Karl Potter moving to lock and Keith Locke switching to the tight head position.
The Wasps disrupted the Cefneithin scrum to such an extent that Andrew Harries was able to hack through and an awful fumble by visiting winger Martin Blofield allowed Darren Brick to scoop up the ball under the posts and score a try which Harries converted.
Llangwm negated Cefneithins ploys with some strong tackling and it wasnt until the 38th minute that Matthews finally found the target from 25 metres to reduce Llangwms lead to 7-3 at the break.
Matthews added a second penalty five minutes into the second period but Llangwm responded with a good handling move which saw Williams put away by Jonathan Palmer before he was illegally held - only for Harries to miss the difficult penalty chance.
Darren Brick was unlucky to be yellow-carded for a high tackle on Blofield where he clearly caught the wingers collar and not his neck and in his absence Cefneithin grabbed their third penalty chance for Matthews to put them ahead.
Then came a massive punch-up in front of the stand after Martin Thomas appeared to be stamped on, with Cefneithin centre Mark Harries shown the red card, as was replacement Rhodri Williams soon afterwards as he allegedly threw punches near the top touchline.
Llangwm brought on Hamish Nicholls and Wayne Davies to boost the forward impact but try as they might they were unable to break down the obdurate Cefneithin defence, with Alec Williams again hauled down just short before the final whistle saw the visitors take away the three points on offer - but had Llangwm been able to turn pressure into points then the final result could have been so different.
