Fishguard Sports 5 Haverfordwest County 1 Referee: Tony Picton

Fishguard Sports gained a welcome win over the weekend as they defeated Haverfordwest County 5-1.

The Sports have been finding the going tough this year as they have had difficulty fielding a settled side. However, on Saturday they combined to produce some scintillating football and if things had gone their way and visiting keeper Steve Price hadnt been in such good form between the sticks, they would have notched up an even bigger score that could have reached double figures.

From the outset the home side knocked the ball about in their attempt to play football and it worked. They stretched the home side defence to breaking point with Rob Hughes and Ricardo Chozas playing particularly well in midfield.

Fishguard went 1-0 up after Mike Harries put them ahead with a spectacular volley from the left but the lead was short lived as the visitors came back with a superb goal by talented striker Matthew Ellis, who powerfully slammed the ball down the slope and into the back of the net, giving Carl Woodhouse no chance.

Fishguard went back into the lead as Gareth OSullivan and Clive Marshallsay worked well down the right and delivered the ball into Ben Jones who neatly struck the ball home.

Funnily enough Fishguard went off the boil a little in the second half. They created plenty of chances in the first period but struggled to score; yet in the second they only created a handful of opportunities and succeeded in scoring three.

The first was by Ben Jones, while Marshallsay grabbed the second after the ball rebounded out following a Rob Hughes shot. Finally Gary Owen responded to a corner by slamming the ball in for their fifth.

Haverfordwest found the going tough after the break but one player who did strand out was Matthew Ellis, who went close, a number of times and was unlucky not to score.
