Merlins Bridge 5 Monkton Swifts 0
It must be pretty frustrating being a Merlins Bridge player. One week you play brilliantly while the next appears to be a struggle, mercifully for the young Wizards, this was a week where they played so well that five goals were struck past Monkton keeper Wayne Reynolds.
The visitors started well with Michael Canton causing plenty of problems up front and several opportunities were wasted.
He also had a penalty appeal against him turned down following a rash challenge but while he was begging the referee to give the spot kick, the Bridge launched a counter attack and Carl Mason scored. Soon after and another attack up field saw veteran striker Peter Jones slam one into the back of the net.
Monkton continued to waste all of their opportunities with a shot being cleared off the line by Steve James, while the Wizards just kept scoring with theirs and Mason added his second for the team's third.
Monkton started the second half brightly hitting the crossbar twice and failing to convert several goal mouth scrambles.
Merlins Bridge weathered the storm and scored 20 minutes into the second half when Sean Jones slammed one home, then with five minutes to go Simon Thomas got the final score for the home side with a well taken goal. A pleased Bridge manager Steve Thompson said:
"When we are on top we can run anyone off the park, we have the makings of a good side. It was a good result and we deserved to win." Meanwhile, frustrated Monkton midfielder Rob Tweed said:
"With the number of chances created I can't believe we didn't score a number of goals. Saying that, I still don't think we would have scored if we were still playing now. It was that sort of game."
