Fishguard Sports 2 St Ishmaels 4
Few things in sport rival watching a precocious talent at play and St Ishmaels Adam Davies is certainly that.
On Saturday he displayed his rich array of skills in a man of the match performance that had his supporters purring with delight. Bearing in mind he hasnt even turned 18, Davies proved that he literally has the world at his feet and providing he can curb his propensity to hold onto the ball for too long, he is going to turn into one of Pembrokeshires finest players, that is of course, unless a professional club comes after him.
Before the season began, Fishguard would have targeted this game as a definite three pointer. However, their season hasnt quite gone to plan and they are struggling with their form and confidence. On the other hand St Ishmaels, despite being promoted from Division Two this season are riding on a crest of a wave at present and they certainly showed why on the weekend at St Marys field.
Ironically it was the home side that scored first as they used the slope to their advantage and Rob Hughes was on hand from a cross from the left to foot the ball home.
Tish responded soon after with a goal of their own as Steve Parkes latched himself on to a loose ball in the box and toe poked it home.
Both sides settled a little after the frenetic goalmouth activity and chances were created from both teams as Carl Woodhouse made a number of diving saves to show his class for Fishguard and John Pawlett saved Tish blushes a few times.
Despite Woodhouses class, he only had himself to blame for the visitors second as an innocuous free-kick by Huw Kucjy crept its way into the back of the net.
It was a calamitous mistake by Woodhouse as he somehow dived over the ball when it would have been easier to pick it up. Sadly for him Paul Walsh couldnt re-dress the balance for the homesters as Tish defence stifled a chance soon after.
It was the visiting team defence that messed up to allow Fishguard to equalise as Woodhouse hoofed the ball up field over the defence (which was too far up field) and Clive Marshallsay found himself with a one on one with Pawlett and he made no mistake in rounding the keeper to score to leave the score 2-2 at the break.
Playing down the slope in the second half the visitors were always in the driving seat and could have scored early on if Glyn Griffiths hadnt shot wide.
But this half was going to belong to Davies. Apart from a couple of efforts at goal from Fishguard, the talented teenager ran the show. First he had a powerful shot well saved but soon made amends when he toe poked one in after a mix-up in the home defence.
He displayed pace, he displayed strength and he displayed his skills, but more importantly he displayed a desire to work hard for the ball and worked off his teammates who at this time were completely in control.
His second and the teams fourth came near the end as the pressure finally told and a beautiful pass by Martin Waterman put the ace striker through and Davies made no mistake as he calmly rounded Woodhouse to slip the ball home.
It was a neat goal from a neat performance by Davies and the visitors, and a top three spot is definitely on the cards for them come the end of the season.
