Fishguard and Goodwick 11 Penclawdd 15
Fishguard and Goodwick came within inches of causing the surprise of the day as they took a deserved 11-point lead into the interval against table-topping Penclawdd but lost out after the break as Rhys Williams found his kicking boots for the Cocklemen and landed five penalties in as many attempts to snatch a victory out of the Seagulls grasp.
Im gutted said home coach Chris Mitchell afterwards and who could blame him because his side had given everything against a big, strong and very physical Penclawdd outfit yet watched as Williams bombed over an opening kick from just inside his own half and landed four others from wide out and close range to stop the Seagulls gaining their first league success in this their eighth match of a hard campaign.
Almost as hard to take was the fact that Fishguard lost dynamic flanker Romeo Collella, (back playing on dual registration from Whitland and a real boost for the Seagulls), who was sent off in the closing stages as he clearly took exception to some skulduggery.
Penclawdd had lost flanker Stuart John in the first period and when they had prop Tom Williams taken off with a second half injury they were forced to call on coach Lee Ratti, normally a No 8, to play for the first time in the front row.
Fishguard flanker Mike Mitchell was also shown a yellow card but the first half was a good one for the Seagulls as they opened their account from a series of drives instigated by Graham Davies, who moved from his regular scrum half berth to No 8 and looked as if he had played there all his life.
He was outstanding alongside brother Evan and Huw Morris as the Seagulls set up several phases before the livewire Collella was perfectly placed to crash over the line.
Huw Evans was off-target with the conversion but notched two penalties after good work by the back row of Davies, Mitchell and Collella to give the Seagulls that 11-point interval lead.
But Penclawdd had good performances from hooker Owen Williams, who led the side by example, and full back Williams, who sneaked the Cocklemen home with his superb place-kicking.
