Rugby - Division one: Whitland 12 Beddau 5 Whitland were deserved winners of their home league match against a Beddau side which had only lost one previous match this season.

But it was extremely hard-fought as both sides struggled to come to terms with a cold cross-wind and the Borderers were unable to turn considerable pressure in the opposing 22 into a single try.

Instead, they had to rely on four short-range penalties from fly half Aled Davies after Beddau had broken out of defence to score a try midway through the second half.

Whitland were well on top in the early exchanges as their pack looked a yard sharper but Gavin Morris sent a drop goal attempt well wide from broken play and that just about summed up the stop-start nature of the game.

Johnny Koloi and Morris combined to send Jack Tremlett on a run but the winger was held up in the left corner, whilst a good lineout take by Carwyn Davies (who had a good game in that area of the match) saw new prop Aperaamo Tauialo go close with a short burst.

Lee Glanville also posed a threat in midfield, but he was hauled down just short, with Aled Davies making little breaks but not putting the final pass to hand - so that the scoresheet was still blank at the interval as Beddau had had little of the ball but defended stoutly.

The second period seemed to be following an identical pattern as Aled Davies sent a drop goal attempt sailing wide - but Beddau finally struck from only their second time in the Borderers' 22 when they snapped up a dropped pass for Brett Davey and Damian Palk to send centre Nathan Walters on a 50- metre run to the line after dodging a despairing tackle from home skipper Andrew Jenkins.

This setback certainly galvanised Whitland into raising the tempo and the arrival of Phil Morgan, Romeo Colella and Richard Smith gave them fresh legs up front - and Aled Davies began to find the mark with his boot.

He notched two penalties in quick succession to nudge the Borderers into the lead, followed by a third via the far post after Colella had been impeded. He missed another drop goal but added a fourth penalty before his side came through a few late counters by Beddau.

They came to nought, however, and Whitland were able to celebrate a fifth win in seven league outings as reward for sticking to the task, even when they weren't firing on all cylinders.
