Dear Editor, - Pembroke Dock Civic Society would like to draw attention to two quotes from this month's Civic Trust Magazine for Wales:

"If Heritage carries on like this it is likely to talk itself out of existence" and "Places and artefacts are abandoned for the intangible and ephemeral"

There are strong messages here for everyone to safeguard the good, and encourage the best of the new in urban design.

There must be planning and control, but the impact on the environment, on residents and the business people, should have pride of place in discussion before any major decisions are made.

People need to feel safe in their neighbourhoods, without fear or unnecessary inconvenience or what could be described as overcrowding, or creating dangerous conditions on the roads.

High density housing, with dwellings wedged in unlikely spaces do not bode well for the future.

The Pembroke Dock Civic Society has amended the principles on which it was founded, to take account of present trends, not to oppose worthwhile developments, but to recommend that greater consideration be given to the views of local people, who should be fully informed before any project is finalised.

It is hoped that any concerns people have, will be made known to the society, which will do its best to make their opinions known.

The society meets on the last Wednesday of every month at the Pater Hall, Pembroke Dock, at 7.30pm from September to April.
