County Rugby Division Four (West): Neyland 17 Fishguard & Goodwick 16 Neyland edged to a narrow win in their local derby against Fishguard.

Both sides found it hard to cope with the wind and cancelled each other out in their determination to win.

The All Blacks were 10-9 ahead at the break with two good tries to three penalties from the Seagulls. And play was just as tight after the interval.

The home side looked assured of a win as they added a third try but then allowed Fishguard straight back in to set up a tense finale. Both sides had chances but failed to score and the All Blacks eased home by a solitary point.

Fishguard made the better start as they played up the slope but Gerwyn Hughes missed a penalty and Gwilym Evans was hauled down just short before their efforts finally paid off after 12 minutes when Gerwyn Hughes drilled home a simple penalty on the 22 metre line.

Mathew Williams stole ball at a lineout and quick hands by Mark Hamer, Mark Riley, Colin Picton and Steve Evans found Delme Bateman outside, although the diminutive winger had plenty to do when he received the ball before reaching the right corner for an unconverted try.

A nice run by Jonathan Jones set up a penalty chance which Hughes landed for the Seagulls and after he had sent a drop goal attempt spiralling wide Hughes landed a third penalty to put his side 9-5 ahead.

Neyland responded with four minutes of the half left, however, as Martin Roberts put in a clever kick ahead and his pack secured good ball. Play was spread right and No 8 Williams had sufficient pace to slice through the gap, reach the line, and put his team a point in front at the interval. Another Hughes penalty hit the upright and was scrambled clear.

The third quarter was very scrappy as neither side could really gain the upper hand and there were errors aplenty. Neyland brought on John Greggain as winger and he made a strong run up the left before Mark Riley was off target with a dropped goal attempt.

But the All Blacks added a third try when Chris Busby secured good lineout ball and from the ensuing drive it was full back Steve Hamer who somehow emerged with the touch-down before Riley added the extras.

But the Seagulls stormed back immediately as Hughes kicked to the corner and Jonathan Jones followed up well to claim the loose ball and speed to the line for Hughes to convert.

It set up a grandstand finish where Mark Chamberlain featured with a run from a tap penalty but Riley failed to capitalise as his drop goal drifted wide - but it mattered little because Fishguard were unable to add to their account and Neyland edged home by the narrowest of margins.

Both teams observed a minute's silence in memory of Neyland stalwart Harry Howells.

Neyland were sponsored by KC Motors and the match ball was sponsored by Mr and Mrs B Llewellyn. The Neyland mascot was Paul Busby, the 8 year old son of skipper and man of the match, Chris Busby.
