DEAR EDITOR, - Sir William Hamilton, diplomat and archaeologist, founded Milford Haven, having inherited the Hubberston and Pill land, through his first wife Catherine Barlow, daughter of MP Hugh Barlow, and he came up with the idea of building a town and a harbour in 1782.
He appointed his nephew, Charles Greville to promote the project. Hamilton obtained an Act of Parliament to establish the port of Milford Haven.
While ambassador in Naples (1764 - 1800) he studied the complete annihilation of Pompei, when Mount Vesuvius erupted, and wrote the important record of that tragic event. In 1800 he returned to Britain, but his last years were overshadowed by the love affair between Horatio Nelson and his second wife, Emma Hamilton.
Would it not be as tragic if Hamilton's legacy, Milford Haven town with its harbour, Hamilton Terrace, Greville Road and the Lord Nelson Hotel, and the surrounding areas, were to suffer a similar fate as that of Pompei, because of a leakage from the LNG plant, if it is located so close to the Haven towns and villages?
The eruption of Mount Vesuvius could not be avoided. However, we can avoid courting disaster with the LNG plant - or any other nasties on our doorstep. MPs, find a remote location, for goodness sake!
