Football - Pembrokeshire League Division One Monkton Swifts 3 Carew 2 Monkton Swifts showed why they are the champions on Saturday.
In atrocious conditions they fought back from a 2-1 deficit to take all three points with a last gasp, injury time winner from super sub Ian Rome.
In driving rain and swirling winds Benno Jones' warriors simply refused to be beaten. After a thorough pitch inspection, and a ten-minute delay to repaint the lines, they got off to a perfect start when striker Stephen Davies powerfully headed home a great cross from Dean Busby.
The vocal home crowd, huddled together in the rickety stand, sensed blood and were audibly shocked when the visitors drew level within a minute.
Swifts 'keeper Craig Reardon, who struggled with his handling throughout, couldn't hold a fierce shot, which skidded along the greasy turf and presented Carew No 9 James Buckle with an easy tap-in.
It was end-to-end stuff with both sides producing some thrilling attacking football and, after twenty minutes, Carew took the lead with a stunning effort.
Haydn Shapcott raced down the right touchline and whipped in an inch-perfect cross for James Buckle who flew through the air and executed a perfect diving header.
Benno Jones clearly had a few words at half time and Swifts came out all guns blazing at the start of the second half.
On 81 minutes the equaliser finally came and it was the feisty Lee Jones who got it, twisting away from his man in the box and firing home to loud cheers and wild celebrations.
A draw would probably have been a fair result but the force was with Monkton now and boy, did they use it.
The clock ticked round past 90 minutes as Stephen Davies picked up the ball near the centre circle. Surrounded by three men, he simply pushed it past them and used his power to out-muscle and outpace them. Reaching the box, with defenders hot on his heels, he somehow managed to square it to substitute Rome who calmly slotted home to seal a memorable victory.
