Rugby Division Five (West): Llangwm 21 Tycroes 13 Two tries by centre Robbie Neill helped Llangwm gain a deserved home win against Tycroes on Saturday.
The Wasps were the only side intent on playing running rugby. The visitors tucked the ball up their pack's shirts and made sure that any adventure was off the menu served up for the hardy band of Llangwm supporters to deride.
The Wasps tried to run the ball, despite the driving rain, as Andrew Williams directed matters at No 10 and in Neill and John Whitticombe he had match-winners waiting to be put into space.
Up front, Will Scale was as busy as ever whilst Anthony Davies led the side by example in the absence of coach Alan McClelland.
Llangwm started the game in promising fashion as they set up a forward drive from the kick off but Tycroes soon poured down the slope to earn a 40-metre penalty chance which fly half Dean Bromham put short and wide of the right upright.
But the No 10 soon made amends with an incisive break after prop Dai Isaac and No 8 Andrew Scannell had gone close with drives at the line, although he failed to add the extras from in front of the posts.
It was clear for Llangwm that they needed to avoid a war of attrition and after winger Jo Jo Francis had missed a 35 metre penalty they claimed a cracking try that stemmed from Andrew Williams' ability to bring players into action at the right time. Hamish Nicholls set up the chance with a good lineout take and when Williams received the ball he held it up nicely for Robbie Neil to burst clear and score at the posts for Francis to notch the left-footed conversion.
John Whitticombe threatened with a couple of strong runs up the slope but a try was missed when the final pass to Francis went astray.
The Wasps were also unlucky to be penalised for 'crossing' as Dai Thomas was put into space by Williams - and with a minute before half time Tycroes took the lead when forward pressure allowed burly player/coach Isaac to trundle over in the right corner.
But there was still time for the Wasps to come back with a bang when scrum half Carl Rees got play away to Williams, who picked the ball up from his bootlaces and fed Neill, for the powerful centre to shrug off two tackles and easily beat the cover on a diagonal run to the line. Francis converted with the final kick of the period and Llangwm were 14-10 ahead at the break.
Tycroes came back with a penalty by full back Geraint Williams within seven minutes of the restart but Francis missed a sitter from in front of the posts after good work by Darren Brick, followed by thrusts from Richard Scriven, Johnny James, Wayne English and Gareth Bevan in the close exchanges.
But midway through the period the Wasps scored their third try after Whitticombe had kicked them into the corner and good lineout work by Davies and Nicholls allowed the pack to drive over, with Aneurin Jones claiming the touch-down as reward for his support play. Whitticombe landed the conversion, which ensured Tycroes needed two scores to win, and although the visitors huffed and puffed in the closing stages they were unable to break down the resolute Llangwm defence.
The Wasps were able to claim a win hat-trick to show the efforts they have made this campaign. They were also able to field a second XV against Fishguard on the adjoining pitch and although they lost 18-5 to the Seagulls Seconds it was pleasing to see a Llangwm Second XV back in action.
The Llangwm ball was sponsored by Ashmole and Co.
