Wales' Young Dairy Farmer of the Year Roger Lewis took one of his cows with him to a Pembrokeshire school when he took part in an initiative to raise awareness of milk and its origins.

His dairy herd is more used to the green fields of Milton than a school hall, so the children of Pennar Junior School welcomed her cardboard cut-out instead.

Roger, of Poyerston Farm, was NFU Cymru's choice to join its School Milk Week team at Pennar Junior School because of his high profile position in the industry.

His autumn calving herd of 180 Holsteins is averaging a milk yield of 8,636 litres.

One such cow was in milk continuously for 550 days, and produced 19,500 litres.

The process this milk went through before reaching the school fridges was explained in detail to his young audience.

The School Milk Project provides milk to any school pupil who wants to participate. Every primary school child aged from seven to 11 is eligible for up to 250ml of EU subsidised milk at school each day.

John Phillips, chairman of NFU Cymru's Milk Committee in Pembrokeshire, joined Roger Lewis for the visit to Pennar Junior School.

"School Milk Week is a fantastic way of making children understand the link between the farmer that produces the milk and the drink that they enjoy every day as part of the subsidised school milk scheme,"he said.
