Local buyers and sellers were out in force for one of the most successful Welsh Black Cattle Society sales in recent years, with several animals selling for well over 2,000 guineas.
Some 219 Welsh black cattle were entered for the 13th Annual Pedigree Show and Sale at Llandovery Market, with 185 of the 195 forwarded for the sale sold.
The highest priced cow and calf went for 2,300gns, sold by Messrs M. V. and G. M. James, of Penybryn, Henllan Amgoed, Whitland.
The cow was first in her class and was champion female and overall champion of the female and maiden heifers.
The in-calf cow Wye Dawn 6th was sold with her bull calf to young Pembrokeshire farmer, Trevor Shanklin, of Canol Dref, Llawhaden, Narberth, for 1,700gns.
The champion maiden heifer was bought for 1,100gns by Gareth James, of Bernards Well Isaf, Tufton, Clarbeston Road.
Richard Bowen, of White House Farm, Molleston, Narberth, bought Brysgaga Addawel 34th, who matched the maiden heifer top price of 2,200gns.
"It must be the 'sale of the century'. The breed is certainly going from strength to strength," said a delighted Welsh Black Cattle Society chief executive, Andrew James.
