Ana Sofia Varela, one of the hottest young stars of fado, is performing at Theatr Mwldan, on November 15th.
Fado means fate. It is the musical expression of people's hopes, dreams and tragic losses. It is best known for its sombre mood, but it can also be joyous and celebratory.
This old musical style is now experiencing a new lease of life, and, in the last few years, young and sophisticated stars have emerged.
Varela, still only in her mid-20s, has a great fado voice and a strong stage presence. She sings fado classics, original tunes, and experiments with flamenco influences, blending it all in a fresh approach that pushes fado further, without breaking its conventions.
We have a pair of tickets to give away to see Varela perform. To win, answer the following question. What does fado mean?
Send you answer, along with your name, address, and telephone number to the Western Telegraph, Old Hakin Road, Merlins Bridge, Haverfordwest, SA61 1XF.
Closing date for all entries is Wednesday, November 10th.Tickets are available from Theatr Mwldan's box office.
