Football - Welsh Cup - Third Round HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY 3 CPD GLANTRAETH 0 FOR long stretches on Saturday, the Blues seemed able to wind into a gentler rhythm than is possible in the Welsh Premier, and the flow of the home side's inter-passing swept the Cymru Alliance side off the park.

For all that, Glantraeth do lead the Cymru Alliance by a long way and they put Cefn Druids out of this cup in the last round, so all credit to Deryn Brace's side for demolishing them in so comprehensive a fashion.

The Eddie's Snooker Bar-sponsored Bluebirds came forward at Glantraeth from the start. The ball was played left, played right and played forward skilfully and easily, with Colin Loss dominating the deep midfield and Richie Adams running dangerously from just behind the front two of Jon Keaveney and Hicks.

The North Walians' goal was threatened a number of times in the first twenty minutes, first when Hicks headed just over then when Palmer missed badly. But the goal came in the 19th minute when Wayne Jones sent in a deep cross from the left and Keaveney pounced to drive home from 15 yards.

The Blues did get the odd wake-up call, notably in the 29th minute when Richard Owen's shot was bound for goal with Lee Kendall beaten, only for Rob Jones (rapidly emerging as one of the most composed defenders in the league) to clear off the line.

A fine save from Kendall thwarted Craig Roberts, but the first half ended with a fine run by Adams setting up Wayne Jones who fired just over, and with a Dean Rossiter blaster humming just wide.

The game was then settled, ten minutes into the second half, by a blast of classy finishing from Tim Hicks. Hicks, returning to the side because Lee Brown was Cup-tied, had looked a little uneasy and tentative in the first half, but the way he took his two chances in the second must have sent his confidence zooming.

In the 53rd minute, he seized on a ball just inside the Glantraeth half, and weaved and darted through the slightest of gaps to fire past Paul Pritchard from 15 yards.

Then he was set up by a superb run down the right by Palmer who got to the by-line before cutting the ball in low, for 'Hicksy' to turn it in powerfully on the volley.

The final 15 minutes saw fine cameo performances by subs Lee Hudgell and Jonathan Clarke who had both done so well against Port Talbot on the Tuesday.

They nearly combined to fashion a fourth goal when Hudgell volleyed Clarke's cross just wide.

In the fourth round of the cup (the last 16) the Blues have been drawn away to UWIC, from the Welsh League, tie to be played on December 4th.

Last night (Tuesday) the Blues were due to play Port Talbot away in the FAW Premier Cup. On Friday evening, they are away to Afan Lido in the league.
