Also present were the Standard bearers for The Royal British Legion and the Standard bearer from The Royal Naval Association, the mayor of Narberth Councillor Henry Langon, County Cllr Wyn Evans, members of Narberth Town Council and comrades and friends from home and away. A native of Arbroath, he spent his formative years in his father's hometown, Carnoustie, where he was well known as a keen footballer and golfer. He was the second of four sons, born into a loving, hard working home, during the depression. Lying about his age, at 14 he enlisted in the Royal Navy as a boy telegraphist. After training on the Isle of Man, he served first in the Pacific, in an American built Woolworth aircraft carrier, where his Commander in Chief was Lord Mountbatten. Shortly after returning to the UK, he volunteered for the Submarine Service and continued in that service for the remainder of his 27 years in the Royal Navy. In his first posting The Ambush, he sailed under the Artic Ice; returning home with some uncertainty, down the west coast of Scotland, the call went out 'Call for Fred Fox, he comes from Carnoustie', it was not until some time later, that he admitted 'there was no way he could recognise any of the Scottish coastline through a periscope!' It was during this period, that he was seconded to the Royal Canadian Navy, a time he very much enjoyed, when he made many lifelong friends. On returning to the UK, he was to serve on various classes of boat, Thermopylae, Scythian, Aeneas, Sleuth, Subtle Trespasser, Porpoise, and Sentinel among them, before being selected to join the fitting out crew, of the first British nuclear-powered submarine, 'Dreadnought', in which he served with pride for the remainder of his sea-going years. Towards the end of his naval career, he took a land post at HMS Dolphin, which also held a special place in his heart; he finally retired from the Royal Navy in 1969. He then joined the licensed trade, and after running a succession of licensed premises with his wife Muriel, throughout the country, he bought The Ivy Bush in Narberth. During the 18 years he owned The Ivy Bush, he earned the friendship and respect of everyone who knew him; he became a well-known character and a popular figure in his adopted hometown. There were family flowers only, but donations can be given to Withybush Hospital and The Submariners' Association c/o Hywel Evans, 3 Wesley Villas, Narberth.
