MRS J. M. DAVIES NORTHANTS (formerly of Sardis)
The funeral took place last Friday, of Mrs Joyce Maureen Davies, who died on April 12th at Northampton General Hospital. She was 88. Joyce was born and brought up at Hangingstone Farm, Sardis, the eldest of four children of Gilbert and Annie Thomas. After leaving Houghton school, Joyce worked on her parents' farm and after their deaths in the following three years, assisted in the disposal of the farm and placement of her sister and two brothers with members of the family. At the age of 17, she moved to stay with an uncle in Portsmouth and entered the nursing profession at St Mary's Hospital. In 1938, having finished training, she moved to Northampton General Hospital where she became a staff nurse and then a sister at 26 - very young for such appointments in that era. Joyce then met and married David, a local farmer, and together they farmed at Hootens Farm, Blakesley, Northants, where they had two children, who are both carrying on the farming tradition, before retiring to live in the village. When farming needs permitted, she was always delighted to return to Pembrokeshire with her family to visit relatives and renew acquaintances. She was predeceased by David in October 2001. The funeral service was conducted by Rev J. Hall at The Counties Crematorium, Milton Malsor, Northants. There were family flowers only, but donations in lieu for The British Heart Foundation are being received by John White, funeral directors, 188 Watling Street East, Towcester, Northants, NN12 6DB. MR R. MARshALL SAUNDERSFOOT The funeral took place on Monday, April 18th at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, of Mr Robert Marshall, of Moonraker, The Ridgeway, Saundersfoot who died at Withybush Hospital, on April 12th aged 82. Rev Andrew Bowden officiated at the service. Mr Marshall was born and educated in Edinburgh. He was a supervisor at the engineering and transport department of the GPO. He served with the RAF and finally moved with the RAF to Pembroke Dock. Family left to mourn and principal mourners were: Doreen (wife); Ann and John (daughter and son-in-law); Lydia (granddaughter); Matthew (grandson); Ronald (brother). The funeral arrangements were carried out by Stewart Treharne, of E. C. Thomas and son, funeral directors, Archways, Green Plains, Stepaside.
MRS D. L. OUGHTON MILFORD HAVEN There was a large gathering of family and friends at St David's church, Hubberston, recently for the funeral of Mrs Delwyn Oughton, followed by interment at Milford Haven Cemetery. Delwyn was a native of Hakin and until her retirement two years ago worked for Hugh Devonald, greengrocer. Family left to mourn are: Gordon (husband); Tina and Reg, Jayne and Alan (daughters and sons-in-law); Scott, Grant, Rhys and Lauren (grandchildren); Ivy (sister); Marion and Raymond (sister and brother-in-law); Jill (sister-in-law); together with nephews and nieces. The principal family mourners were: Gordon (husband); Tina and Reg Goddard, Jayne and Alan Nicholas (daughters and sons-in-law); Scott Goddard and Amelia Smithson (grandson and partner); Grant Goddard, Rhys Nicholas (grandsons); Lauren Nicholas (granddaughter); Ivy Scoble (sister); Marion and Raymond Lloyd (sister and brother-in-law); Jill Thomas (sister-in-law). The bearers were Alan Nicholas, Reg and Scott Goddard and David Scoble. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.
MRS I. L. CHARLES NEYLAND The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on April 12th, of Mrs Irene Langdon Charles, of 5 Fleming Way, Neyland, aged 78. The funeral service at St Clement's church, Neyland was attended by the family and the many friends from the community where she had many interests, and was followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. The service was conducted by Rev Paul Flavell, of St Clement's and Llanstadwell. Predeceased by her husband Ted, and infant son Graham, she leaves to mourn: Martin and Janet (son and daughter-in-law); Jennifer and Leighton (daughter and son-in-law); Linsey and Anthony, Katie and Stuart (granddaughters and husbands); Adrian and Vicky (grandson and partner); Christopher (grandson); Frances and Carys (great-granddaughters); Trevor Perry (friend); and other family and friends too numerous to mention. The bearers were Mervyn Williams, Clive John, Tony Tuckwell and Rodger Davies. There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu for the Paul Sartori Foundation, c/o Mr Trevor Perry, 70 Lawrenny Street, Neyland. MRS M. M. MERRIMAN BEGELLY The death occurred on March 30th, at Ridgeway Nursing Home, of Mrs Millicent Mabel Merriman, previously of Carne Farm, Begelly, Kilgetty. She was 81. Mrs Merriman was born at Bank House Farm, Spittal and farmed there with her parents until her marriage to Jack in 1949 when she played an active part in running Carne Farm until her stroke in 1995. This left her seriously disabled and she went to live at Ridgeway Nursing Home. Her main interests were her family and her farm, where she was involved in stock rearing and a seasonal tractor driving until she was struck by ill health. She was the organist at St Mary's church, Spittal for 13 years before her marriage. Predeceased by her husband, Jack, in December 2004, she leaves to mourn: Norma and Hugh Tribe (daughter and son-in-law); Kay Merriman and Gerald Beynon (daughter and partner); William Tribe (grandson); Mr and Mrs Gareth Jones (niece and husband). The funeral took place at St David's church, Prendergast on April 8th, followed by interment at Prendergast Cemetery, where she was buried with her parents. The service was officiated by Canon Geoffrey Gwyther. Bearers were Colin Beynon, Martin Brodie, Peter Edwards, Aubrey Hilling, Michael Hilling and Delme Killa. There were family flowers only. Principal mourners were: Norma and Hugh Tribe (daughter and son-in-law); Kay Merriman and Gerald Beynon (daughter and partner); William Tribe (grandson); Mr and Mrs Gareth Jones (niece and husband). MR B. W. GILL PEMBROKE The death occurred at South Pembrokeshire Hospital, after a nine-week stay, on April 11th, of Mr Brian William Gill, of 12 West Street, Pembroke. He was 71. Mr Gill was a native of Tiverton, and served 22 years in the RAF as a Sergeant. He was stationed at Castlemartin Camp for 15 years, as a range worker; six years in Germany, and also served at various other postings in the United Kingdom. His main interests were rugby, cricket, football, squash and he was captain of the ten-pin bowling team at Scampton. Other interests included racing, music and gardening. Family left to mourn are: Marion (wife); Mervyn and Pam, Tiverton, Devon (brother and sister-in-law). The service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, on April 15th and was officiated by Canon Geoffrey Gwyther. Principal mourners were: Marion Gill (wife); Mervyn and Pam Gill (brother and sister-in-law); Eve and Delroy Lewis, Stella Hughes, Stephen and Pat Skyrme, Caroline and Gerran Phillips, Newton Skyrme (sisters and brothers-in-law); Kay Batstone, Lauren and Courtney, Mark Skyrme, Ian Hughes, Tracey and Mike Smith, Rebecca, Kerry and Norman Goodman, Helen Phillips (Cardiff), Richard Phillips and Kate (Cardiff). MR C. C. WILLEY BEGELLY The death occurred on April 11th at Withybush Hospital, after a short illness, of Mr Claude C. Willey, of 10 Fir Grove, Begelly, Kilgetty, aged 83. Mr Willey was a native of Kinver, Worcestershire, and joined the Guinness brewery as an office boy at the age of 14 and remained with the company all his working life. He served as a Royal Marine Commando during World War Two in the 44 Commando Unit and was awarded the Burma Star for service in campaigns in the Far East. As a member of 44 Commando, Claude was also trained at a Welsh base in Saundersfoot, and returned to Wales in 1974 when his career with the Guinness company brought him and his family to Pembrokeshire. Throughout his life he valued the camaraderie of the British Legion and the Burma Star Association. He was president of the Saundersfoot Branch of the British Legion. His love of cricket was well known. In his local club in Warwickshire he was club secretary and a keen amateur player for many years, and then latterly he enjoyed acting as umpire in matches at Scolton Manor. An active member of the church both in Warwickshire where he served as warden and then at St Mary's, Wiston. He was always involved in the life of the community especially Clarbeston Road gymkhana and the local amateur dramatic group in Clarbeston Road. He was predeceased by his first wife Ena in 1991 and is survived by Kay (wife); Stephen and Penelope Willey, Stuart and Joanna Willey (sons and daughters-in-law); Jane and Richard James (daughter and son-in-law); Sarah Willey, Victoria James, Ursula Willey, Frances Willey, Olivia James (grandchildren); Petranella, Danniella and Thomas (step-grandchildren); Bradley, Christian and Joseph (step-great grandchildren). The funeral took place at St Mary's, Wiston on April 16th and was conducted by Rev Nick Cale, Canon Geoffrey Gwyther and Miss Nan Warlow. Bearers were Stephen Martin, Bert Rivers, Robert James and James Evans. Principal mourners were: Kay Willey (wife); Stephen and Penelope Willey, Stuart and Joanna Willey (sons and daughters-in-law); Jane and Richard James (daughter and son-in-law); Sarah Willey, Ursula Willey, Frances Willey, Olivia James (grandchildren); Petranella, Danniella and Thomas (step-grandchildren); Bradley, Christian and Joseph (step-great grandchildren); Janis and Peter Rodwell (niece); Olive Nabbs (sister-in-law); Andrew Nabbs (nephew); Robin Gardner (friend). Unable to attend was granddaughter Victoria James. Funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.
MR D. M. JENKINS HAVERFORDWEST The funeral took place at St Thomas' Church, Haverfordwest, followed by interment at City Road Cemetery, on April 12th at 2.30pm of Mr David Maynard Jenkins, of 16 Albany Court, Haverfordwest, who died, after a short illness, at Withybush Hospital on April 2nd. He was 85. Canon D. Evans and Rev Thomas officiated at the service. Mr Jenkins was a native of Cutty Bridge, but lived most of his life in Haverfordwest. After serving with the Welsh Regiment during the Second World War, Maynard worked for many years at the Trapps Farm, near Nolton Haven. He then spent some time in the building trade before returning to the job he loved most - farming. He spent many years at Millin Farm and The Dingle Farm and was in his 70s when he retired. He loved the land and was at his happiest when in the countryside and working in all aspects of farm life. Family left to mourn and principal mourners were: Debbie Kramer and Nigel Brock (niece and partner); Judith and Michael Hellyar (niece and husband); Maureen and Ken Jenkins (niece and husband); Margaret and Graham Jones (niece and husband); Natalie Kramer and Marcus Robe (great-niece and partner); Thomas Maynard Robe (great-great-nephew); Richard Hellyar (great-nephew). The bearers were Michael and Richard Hellyar, Nigel Brock, Marcus Robe. Maynard was predeceased by his sisters Ivy, Sylvia and Joyce. As well as family members, his funeral was attended by his many friends from both his working days and neighbours from Albany Court. MR G. J. SKONE PEMBROKE A large congregation of family and friends attended the funeral at St John's Church, Pembroke Dock, on April 12th, of Mr Glyn James Skone, of Ashdale Lane, The Green, Pembroke. Rev Andrew Davies conducted the service with readings, poems, prayers and tributes contributed by family members. The principal mourners were Janet (wife); Amanda; Clive; Helen and Darren (children); Sam, Sue, Simon and Ruth (in-laws); Jack; Emily; Shannon; Andrew; Ryan and Charlie (grandchildren); Mrs M. Friel (sister); Mr and Mrs J. Gwyther (in-laws); Mrs G. Griffiths (in-law) and nephews, nieces, family and friends too numerous to mention. The bearers were Clive Skone, Darren Skone; Sam Kingston; and Simon Finch. There were family flowers only with donations in lieu for ITU at Morriston Hospital, Swansea, c/o John Roberts and Son funeral directors, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock, who carried out the funeral arrangements.
MR F. BUNT ABERCARAIRD (Formerly of Pembroke Dock) The funeral took place on April 20th of Mr Fred Bunt, who died at his home in Abercaraird on April 12th, aged 73. Born in Pennar, Pembroke Dock, he attended Coronation School. After leaving school, he went to work as a tea boy and worked his way up to general foreman for Christiani Neilson. Fred leaves to mourn his wife Maguerite; David and Lisa (son and daughter-in-law); Christopher and Cheryl (son and daughter-in-law); Catherine and Robert (daughter and son-in-law); Michael and Helen (son and partner) and Lilian Williamson, Margaret Powell, Eleanor Parsons and Sheila Ronald (sisters). There were no flowers by request, but donations can be given to the Arthritis Charity.
DR D. G. OWEN HAVERFORDWEST The death occurred on April 15th, of Dr David G. Owen at Parc-y-Llyn Nursing Home. In accordance with his wishes, a private cremation was held on April 20th. Donations may be sent to The Paul Sartori Foundation, c/o the treasurer, 31 Haven Road, Haverfordwest.
