PEMBROKESHIRE'S first-ever home-bred reindeer has been leading a baby boom at a county tourist attraction.
The female reindeer was born to Comet and Dancer at Folly Farm, Begelly last week. And her arrival is a credit to the staff at Folly Farm, as reindeer are known to be difficult to manage in captivity, says head zookeeper Tim Morphew.
"They are used to much tougher conditions and require a very specific diet," he explained.
The new arrival brings Folly Farm's reindeer total to seven. Along with the baby and her parents, there are Donner and Blitzen and year-old youngsters Errol and Rudy - whose mums, Dancer and Blitzen, were already pregnant when they took up residence at the park.
Tim said: "Dancer is doing a fantastic job as a mother - she is very protective of her new little girl."
A busy week of births has also seen the arrival of two wallabies - one albino - six ring-tailed lemurs and three raccoons in the children's zoo; a foal, lambs and a litter of piglets on the farm, while young rabbits, chicks, ducklings and lots of baby chipmunks have been keeping staff busy at the pet centre.
Folly Farm is offering a family ticket to the person who chooses the best name for the baby reindeer.
Entries should be sent to Folly Farm, Begelly, Kilgetty by next Wednesday, May 11th.
