Rugby: Natwest Bank Pembrokeshire Youth RU Cup final Crymych 5 Whitland 25

Two tries in ten minutes by centre Dan Mason helped Whitland pick up the Youth Cup trophy at the expense of a gritty Crymych side.

The home side played superbly in the first half but found it hard going in trying to quell the pace and power of Mason and co-centre Jonathan Davies after the break.

Welsh international Davies was a constant threat with his strong running and, although Crymych tackled like demons, he began to punch holes in the midfield.

He first set up a try for lively flanker Ryan Michael and then put Mason away to turn the game on its head after the young Borderers had been just 6-5 ahead at the break and might have been trailing as they allowed indiscipline to creep into their play.

But they settled afterwards and with Mason converting both his tries there was only going to be one winner from then on.

The Whitland pack showed its power early on to secure a brace of penalties which Mason kicked to nudge them 6-5 ahead and went close to the first try when hooker Mark Jones was hauled down near the line after centre Davies had made the initial break.

From the resulting scrum five, nippy Crymych scrum half Steffan Phillips broke from his own line, raced into the Whitland half, chipped ahead, gathered an awkward bounce and showed good balance as he avoided a tackler and reached the line.

Aled Bowen missed the conversion and a penalty from almost the same spot so that Whitland led 6-5 at the interval as Matthew Williams' Crymych pack worked hard and Whitland didn't help themselves by conceding a string of penalties.

But all that changed after the break, with Davies putting Michael over at the posts as reward for his support play.

Although Mason missed the easy conversion, he soon made amends as yet another Jonathan Davies outside break created space for Mason to speed to the line and add the extra points.

Michael was again involved with the next Whitland try as he smuggled the ball at a ruck and put Mason away on a blind side run from half way that gave him his second try and conversion.

It finally killed off Crymych hopes and there was no denying Whitland's rights to the silverware, although Crymych deserve great credit. The referee was David Street, with Steve Jones and Mike Brickle as his touch judges.
