Rugby National league division three (west) Tenby United 20 Llandeilo 18

Teenager Aled Griffiths was the unlikely hero for Tenby United as his last-gasp penalty eased Tenby United home to a narrow win over a Llandeilo side which endured the agony of relegation as a result.

Griffiths was included on the wing but was called upon to play at outside half during the entire second half after Scott McLaughlin had suffered a bang on the head, and after a shaky start was part of the Seasiders' revival from an 18-5 deficit with only seven minutes left.

They pulled back to a point adrift as winger James Davies grabbed two good tries and Griffiths slotted the first conversion but was unable to notch the other from the touchline.

In time added on by the referee he found the mark with the all-important three-pointer after replacement Darren Rees had missed a more difficult chance just before.

It left Llandeilo reflecting on what might have been after their recent revival, with both sides missing chances galore in the first period but with Llandeilo 6-5 ahead after outside half Howard Thomas had landed a penalty either side of a cracking try for McLaughlin after James Davies cleared up a long kick well, Anthony Griffiths set up the chance with a typical bullocking run and skipper Nicky Allen did well to create space for his outside half to dive over the line.

Llandeilo started the second period in determined mood and a good run by powerful centre Aaron May allowed winger Dean Owen to claim a try before the Seasiders threw away a gilt-edged chance after Griffiths had hacked the ball to the posts and Tenby were awarded a penalty two metres out.

Skipper Allen tried a quick tap penalty instead of opting for a certain three points but his expectation wasn't matched by his execution because he knocked the ball on in his haste to score!

Even worse was to follow because Llandeilo moved swiftly back downfield and May again burst clear to set up co-centre Gareth Thomas for a try which Howard Thomas converted.

Tenby had been guilty of many errors in their quest for points but in the closing stages their greater fitness and will to win told after Griffiths and Rees had both made a hash of penalty chances.

The Seasiders battered their way through as Scott Payne, Mike Lewis, Chris and Rob James all featured before Mark Heywood latched on to a loose ball, swapped passes with Davies and crashed over for a try which Griffiths did well to convert.

The back row of Anthony Griffiths, Rob James and Allen was again involved when the Seasiders claimed their third try, James Davies doing well to take a difficult pass and still have enough power to twist out of a tackle to score too wide out for Aled Griffiths to convert.

It seemed as if Tenby's chance of securing victory were gone when Rees shanked a penalty which didn't get off the ground but the Seasiders kept their composure and one last charge by their excellent pack secured another penalty just to the left of the posts. Griffiths managed to slot it between the sticks - and Tenby were delighted to secure a win while the look on the Llandeilo players' faces showed how desperate they were for victory.
