Merlins Bridge boxers have now been recognised as a prominent force within the circles of amateur boxing having hit the scene in Wales with a steady stream of local wins and produced a Welsh champion at senior level.

The Bridge youngsters were unlucky in the Welsh Schools Finals held recently in both Thomas Town in the Rhondda Valleys and at the Ysgol Griffith Jones School, St Clears, who have not had a feast of boxing at this level for years.

Full credit to John Phillips, IABA referee and judge from St Clears in organising the the successful event.

Thomas Glover recently lost his 44 kg final, narrowly missing his Four Nations selection by a whisker at Thomas Town, but bounced back in style when confidently beating Tom Babriscace of Towy ABC with both slick boxing skills and added punching power for a unanimous points decision.

After giving the Towy boy a count in the third round, new recruit Vinny Channon, with two losses to the same boy on his record, boxed the same boy with a new vigour and determination, winning a majority decision.

James Thomas, at 52 kg, and Barry Frost, at 60 kg, are new to the gym and boxing for the first time.

They showed that amateur boxing is now, more than ever, a game of cat and mouse! Combining discipline, skill, style, patience and power, both won with unanimous points wins. Trainers Graham Brockway and Steven Glover would like to thank John Phillips, IABA referee and judge once more for his precious time and would really like to impress on all that sponsorship for this club is now imperative.

Wayne O'Sullivan, Welsh Middleweight champion is now back in full training and due to attend Welsh Squad training on the May 13th - 15th and to box in the Time Club, Swansea, against the navy on May 17th. He has every intention to compete and win the Welsh finals again this year and qualify for the Commonwealth Games in Australia next year.

Anybody considering sponsorship of any sort should contact trainers Graham Brockway on 01437 763984 or Steve Glover on 01348 840972.
