MRS I. M. PARKER NARBERTH The death occurred on April 8th, at Withybush Hospital of Mrs Ida Margaret Parker (Hammond), of Sunnybank Residential Home, Narberth. Mrs Parker was a native of Ludlow, Shropshire, and moved to Narberth to be near her family in 1985, following the death of her husband George in 1980. She was a teacher in the Church School at Caynhem for several years prior to her marriage in 1933 and always retained her love of children, working as a Sunday school teacher and youth club leader for many years. Mrs Parker was a staunch Methodist all her life, attending Albany Church, Haverfordwest, up until three weeks before going into hospital following a stroke. Living in Narberth, she also attended services at Tabernale URC and Bethesda Baptist and looked forward to the weekly Sisterhood meetings. Mrs Parker was a practical person and, while able, was giving of herself, always preparing items for church bazaars, visiting the sick and elderly and taking an active interest in people, especially children. She spent many hours knitting squares to make into blankets for Save the Children Fund and other charities. She loved gardening, nature and going for a walk every day. Mrs Parker died at the age of 98, her bright eyes, ready smile and independent spirit belying her age. She began to deteriorate mentally ten years ago. For Mrs Parker her family was her joy and were the bedrock of her support, especially in recent years. Family members left to mourn are Sheila and Ron, Marion and John (daughters and sons-in-law), Jane and Peter, Sally and Andrew, Chris, Nicky and Howard and Marcus and Louise (grandchildren and spouses), Robert, Matthew, Bryony and Imogen (great-grandchildren), Vera (sister), eight nephews and nieces and their families. Principal mourners are: Sheila and Ron, Marion and John (daughters and sons-in-law); Jane representing Peter, Robert and Matthew, Sally and Andrew, Chris, Nicky and Howard, Marcus representing Louis (grandchildren aad spouses), Bryony and lmogen (great-grandchildren). Rosemary representing Phil, Nigel, Chris and Kathryn and their children and Marney's family (niece), Colin, representing Eileen (niece) Elizabeth and Tim, Edward Sanders representing the Sanders family, great-nephew. The funeral took place on April 14th, at Albany Church, Haverfordwest, followed by a service at Parc Gwyn Crematorium. MRS E. M. DYSON PEMBROKE DOCK The death occurred on May 2nd, at Withybush Hospital, of Mrs Elizabeth Mabel Dyson, of 154 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock, aged 88. Mrs Dyson was a native of Pembroke Dock and during the War she had worked on the buses. She also worked at Pembroke Power Station during its construction, serving tea and coffee to the contractors and then worked in the Co-op Furniture Store in Gordon Street, until her retirement some years ago. Her main interests were her family, but she loved going to the RAFA Club, Commercial Row, Pembroke Dock, and going out in the car travelling around Freshwater West, Angle Bay, Lawrenny and Saundersfoot. Predeceased by her husband, Thomas Edward (Eddie) Dyson, six years ago, she leaves to mourn: Eileen Thomas (daughter); Ruth and Wiston Owen (daughter and husband); Wendy Wright and partner Alan Turnbull; Phillip and Kirsty Thomas, Craig, Daniel and Chelcie, Margaret, Steve and Christian, Beverly, Shaun and Sarah, Nigel, Tracy and Charlene, Gareth, Keith and Jane, Lisa and Helen, Kelly and Nikita, Jammie Lea (grandchildren, partners, great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter); Evlyn Pearce (sister). The funeral took place on Monday, at St Johns church, Pembroke Dock, followed by interment at Llanion cemetery and was officiated by Rev V. Gardener. The bearers were Phillip, Alan, Nigel, Keith, Steve and Christian (grandsons). MRS M. JOHN LANCASHIRE (formerly of Haverfordwest) The death occurred in Lancashire, on April 24th, of Mrs Margaret (Peggy) John. She was 94. Margaret John, always known as Peggy, was a native of Neyland, having been born at Leonardston Farm in 1910. She was the second child and only daughter of George and Cecilia Roberts who farmed there, and sister to Jim, Jack and David Roberts (all deceased). In 1940 Peggy married Stanley John (R. S. T. John), a native of Haverfordwest and travelled to India to join him. He was an officer in the Indian civil service. They had three children, Jonathan, Susan and Jeremy (deceased), and returned to this country in 1947, living in several parts of the UK, after which they returned to Haverfordwest on retirement in 1970 to live in Haven Road. Predeceased by her husband, Peggy leaves to mourn Jonathan and Susan (son and daughter); Maggi and Malcolm (daughter-in- law and son-in-law); Cameron, Joanna, Adrian and Nicolas (grandchildren); and great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Natasha, Ciaran, Gwydion and Sam. The funeral took place in Lancashire last Wednesday, Peggy having decided to move there some two years ago to be nearer her daughter Susan. MR J. J. LLOYD WHITLAND The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on April 27th, of Mr John James Lloyd, of Brynawel, Henllan Amgoed, Whitland, who died at his home on April 20th, at the age of 72. Mr Lloyd lived alone and led a very quiet and independent life. After leaving school he joined his father in the business of agricultural contracting. At the age of 32 he suffered a very serious accident when he was working on a Dutch barn that caught fire. He did initially escape unhurt, but then realised that his father was trapped on top of the barn. He went back up to the top of the hay shed, managed to rescue his father and guide him to safety. He became blinded by smoke and failed to reach the escape ladder. He suffering very severe burns to his face, neck, arms and hands. For the best part of two years he underwent plastic surgery in the burns unit at Chepstow Hospital. In spite of his severe facial disfigurement and deformity of both hands, many years later he resumed his work in agricultural contracting on a part-time basis. He continued to work in this capacity until his retirement at the age of 55. He was unmarried, but leaves to mourn one brother and four sisters plus nephews and nieces too numerous to mention. The principal mourners were his brother Randal, who was unable to attend, but was represented by his wife Pam; sisters Betty, Edwina, Celia and Rosalie and nephews and nieces; numerous family, friends and neighbours. The bearers were Lloyd Evans, Richard Court, John Lloyd, Rosslyn Nicholas, Kevin Evans (nephews) and Neville Rees (a very good friend). Rev Kingsley Taylor officiated at the service. MR W. E. COLLINS CRUNDALE The funeral took place on April 20th, with cremation at Parc Gwyn, of Mr Walter E. Collins, of Crundale, who had died at Withybush Hospital on April 12th, aged 89. He leaves to mourn his wife Margaret Collins, daughter Lucy Collins and son William Collins. Mr Collins had enjoyed a fruitful life in semi-retirement while living in Fishguard. He was a retired shopkeeper at Tenby House, Fishguard, and he had served in the Welsh Guards, Tank Regiment and was in Germany during World War Two. His main interests were bowling (he was a past member of Fishguard Club), and snooker (also a past member of Fishguard Club).
MRS E. BRITTON MILFORD HAVEN There was a large gathering of family and friends at Thornton Baptist Church for the funeral of Mrs Edith Britton, of Green Cottage, Pill, Milford Haven, followed by internment at Milford Haven Cemetery conducted by Rev Bartlett. Edith died at Torestin Nursing Home, Tiers Cross, on April 27th, aged 92. She was nursed by her family for many years until recently, when she was hospitalised and then transferred to Torestin Nursing Home. She was predeceased by her husband Sidney in 1972 and her eldest grandson Mark in 1995. Left to mourn are her four children John, Margaret, David, Richard and their families. Principal mourners were: Mr and Mrs K. Mathias (daughter and son-in-law); Mr and Mrs J. Britton, Mr and Mrs D. Britton, Mr and Mrs R. Britton (sons and daughters-in-law); Peter and Michelle, Jane and Mark, Clare and Trevor, Stephen, Alan, Carl and Alex (grandchildren and partners), together with many nephews, nieces and family friends Unable to attend were Mrs Molly Evans (sister); Mrs Phylis Britton (sister-in-law) and Mrs Jane Britton (granddaughter-in-law). MR B. D. DAVIES HAVERFORDWEST The funeral took place at St Martin's Church, Haverfordwest, followed by interment at Haverfordwest's City Road Cemetery on Friday, April 29th, of author and historian Baden Desmond Davies, of 33 Cromie Avenue, Haverfordwest. Mr Davies died at South Pembrokeshire Hospital on April 23rd, aged 86. The officiating minister was Rev Cannon C. Bowen. Mr Davies, a native of Haverfordwest, enlisted in the Pembrokeshire Yeomanry as a young man and at the onset of the Second World War served as a wireless operator with the Royal Artillery in north Africa and Italy, being heavily involved in front-line activity throughout the Battle of Monte Casino. Throughout his life, Mr Davies valued the camaraderie of the British Legion. In 1991, Baden wrote and published a book Born and Bred, which was based on his childhood memories of his beloved Haverfordwest. Family left to mourn are his wife Dorothea, brother John, sister-in-law Joan, nieces, nephews and cousins and friends too numerous to mention. The bearers were Alun Nicholas, Brian Davies, Ian Morris and Les Morris. MRS F. E. MORGAN SIMPSON CROSS (Formerly of St Davids) The death occurred on April 21st, at Withybush Hospital, of Mrs Florence Erene, of 32 Castle View, Simpson Cross. She was 74. Mrs Morgan was born at Glynsbity, Middle Mill, Solva. Then she moved to Kingherriet Fold and later to The Fagwr Walters, near Solva. She married Peter in 1953 and they made their home at Awel-For, Trelerwr, St Davids, where they farmed until their retirement in 1997, when they moved to Simpson Cross. Florence devoted all her time to her family. Family left to mourn are: Peter (husband); Eileen and Keith (daughter and son-inlaw); Marie, Emma, Katie (grandchildren); and respective partners Barry, Jonathan, Christopher, Shaun and Maxwell (great-grandchildren); Dilys Harries (sister); Sarah Jenkins (niece); Bryn and Katie Rees (brother-in-law and sister-in-law); and many other family members and close friends. The family service was held on April 25th, at Middle Mill, Solva, and interment in the adjoining cemetery, which was officiated by Rev Aled Jenkins and Mr John Evans. Bearers were Arwel Reynolds, Graham Harries, Derek Rees (nephews); Dilwyn Phillips (friend). Unable to attend were Norman Harries (brother-in-law); Beryl Antoine and Sheila Harries (nieces); and Mr and Mrs Rogers (neighbours). MR M. McGILLOWAY LAMPHEY The funeral took place on April 29th, at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, of Mike McGilloway, of Bayford, Freshwater East Road, Lamphey, who died at his home on April 22, aged 71. Mike was born in Portsmouth and moved to Pembroke when the power station was under construction. He decided to learn Welsh and attained a high level of fluency. His other interests were reading, crosswords, playing bridge and singing with the Griffon Choir. The choir sang Rev Eli Jenkins' prayer from Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas at the service. A large number of family and friends attended, including his wife Judy, their children Annabel, Peter and Celia, Ian and Dominique (son and daughter-in-law); Richard, Jane and Michael (son, daughter-in-law and grandson); Peter, Stella and Kevin (brother, sister-in-law and nephew). Rev Martin Cox officiated, assisted by Rev Carolyn Wood. The funeral arrangements were carried out by John Roberts and Son.
MRS O. B. STICKINGS SAUNDERSFOOT The funeral took place on Monday of Mrs Olive Brinn Stickings, formerly of Saundersfoot, who died at Park House Court Nursing Home, Tenby on Sunday of last week. Predeceased by her husband Tom Stickings, she is survived by her son Brian, daughter-in-law Marie, daughter Helen, along with partner Richard and grandchildren Katie and Owen. MR W. H. C. WILLIAMS PENALLY The funeral took place on Monday of Mr William Harold Cyril (Bill) Williams, of Greengate, Retreat Road, Penally. Aged 88, he died at Park House Court Nursing Home, Tenby on Saturday, April 30th. He is survived by his wife Pegi, daughters Melanie, Marilyn, Teresa and Claire, sons-in-law, nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. MRS R. BEYNON PENTLEPOIR The death occurred at her home on April 29th of Mrs Rosa Beynon, of 2 The Coppins, Pentlepoir. She was 91. She had suffered failing health over the past months and had been a patient at Withybush Hospital for a fortnight. Rosa was born at Upper Watershill, Broadmoor, in 1914, and married local farmer Thomas Stanley Beynon in 1938. They lived at Fold Park Farm, Jeffreyston, for 32 years. Following her husband's death in 1970, Rosa had made her home at 2 The Coppins for the past 35 years. Outside her farming life, she was a staunch supporter of Cold Inn Baptist Chapel, where she attended throughout her life. She leaves to mourn Joan and Lionel Allen, Jean and Brian Lewis (daughters and sons-in-law), Marilyn and John Hay, Bridget and Len Hill, Gareth and Anne-Marie Allen (grandchildren), Sophie and Dafydd, Gavin and Rachel, Zoe, Amy, Georgia and Jake (great-grandchildren), Kyle and Brooklyn (great-great-grandchildren). The funeral service took place last Wednesday at St Jeffrey and St Oswald's Church, Jeffreyston and was followed by interment at Cold Inn Baptist Chapel. MRS M. WALTERS TENBY The funeral took place on Friday of Mrs Mollie Walters, of 8 Knowling Mead, Tenby. Aged 77, she died on Thursday, April 28th. Predeceased by her husband Dennis in 2002, she is survived by her daughter Alison, son-in-law Terry, son Philip, daughter-in-law Denise, grandchildren Chris, Emma, Amy, Tom, Matthew, Hannah, Victoria and Lucy and sister Marlene Phillips. MR J. R. LLEWELLYN KINGS CAPLE (formerly of Haverfordwest) The funeral recently took place of Mr James Ronald Llewellyn (Ron), of Kings Caple, Ross-on-Wye. He was 79. Mr Llewellyn was born at 70 Barn Street, Haverfordwest, the youngest of four children. He was educated at Barn Street National School and Haverfordwest Grammar School. On leaving school, he trained as an electrician, at the Electricity Board. He served in the RAF during the Second World War. He lived in Reading for many years, and moved to Kings Caple five years ago. He was proud of his roots, and visited Haverfordwest at every opportunity. He leaves to mourn his wife Sheila, daughter Sian and son John, and his sister, Mrs Nancy Price, of Broad Haven, together with many nieces and nephews and friends. Mr Llewellyn's ashes will be interred at St Martin's Church, Haverfordwest, at a later date.
MRS I. D. THOMAS HAVERFORDWEST The death occurred on April 17th at Merlin House Residential Home, Merlins Bridge, Haverfordwest, of Mrs Ivy Doreen Thomas. She was 82. Mrs Thomas was born in Saundersfoot, but had lived in Haverfordwest since 1950 and during the Second World War she worked at the Munitions Factory at Trecwn. At the end of the War, Ivy became a mother and housewife and in the 1960s she ran a bed and breakfast at the family home. She was a member of the RAOB Social Club for many years. Predeceased by her husband, Wilfred Eric Thomas, and her son, Roy, family left to mourn are: Doreen and Ray Ball (daughter and son-in-law); Pat Thomas (daughter-in-law); Martin and Derli Ball, Barry and Dodie Thomas (grandsons and wives); Darren Thomas (grandson); Sam, Maegan, Rhiannon and Noah (great-grandchildren). The funeral took place on April 25th at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, and was conducted by Canon D. Evans. Ivy has been laid to rest in the Garden of Remembrance at Parc Gwyn near her husband and son. The bearers were Barry Thomas, Darren Thomas, Martin Ball (grandsons) and Ken Wyburn (friend). MR P. WILSON KEESTON The death occurred at Park House Court Nursing Home, Tenby, on May 4th, of a well-known and highly respected former consultant surgeon, Mr Peter Wilson, of Ravenscraig, Scamford Lane, Keeston, Haverfordwest. A native of Kirkcaldy, Fife, Mr Wilson, who was 74, was consultant surgeon at the old County Hospital and Withybush Hospital for many years and will be fondly remembered not only for his skill, but also for his quiet, unassuming and courteous manner and his genuine concern for his patients. After medical school at the University of Edinburgh, he became registrar and senior surgical registrar at Cardiff Royal Infirmary before moving to Pembrokeshire to join the medical staff of the County War Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Haverfordwest and was Rotary district governor for 1150 District in 1995-96. He was also a popular member of Haverfordwest Probus Club. He will be missed by a wide circle of friends. For many years he and his family lived in a house he designed himself at Withybush Road, but moved to Keeston when industrial estate developments threatened his privacy. He was a keen and skilled DIY exponent in his leisure and retirement time. He attended Keeston URC Chapel. Mr Wilson leaves to mourn his wife, Mrs Sheena Wilson, daughter Mrs Deidre Coppen, sons Calum and Niall Wilson and their spouses and three grandchildren. The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, on Monday, when Rev Harding Rees officiated. Interment will take place at Dysart Cemetery, Fife, Scotland. The bearers were Cord Becht, Nigel Davies, Malcolm Green, Dennis Mayman and Dai Davies. The principal mourners were: Mrs Sheena Wilson (wife), Deirde Coppen (daughter), Calum Wilson and Niall Wilson (sons) and their families, Karl, Laura and Ryan Wilson (grandchildren). MR G. D. R. CAVILL PENALLY The funeral of George Denis Cavill, husband of county councillor Carol Cavill, took place at St Nicholas and St Teilo's Church, Penally, on May 6th and was followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. Mr Cavill was born in Teignmouth, Devon. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he was evacuated and lived with his grandmother in Penally. He attended Penally school throughout the War years and after leaving school he initially trained as a motor mechanic. He then joined the Royal Navy, spending the majority of his time in the Far East. In 1949, he was serving aboard HMS Amethyst in China. While sailng up the Yangtze River, the ship came under fire. Many of the crew were killed or wounded. The remaining crew, including George, were held hostage on the ship by the Chinese Communist forces for three months. By disguising the ship , undercover of darkness they eventually escaped, making a 140-mile dash to the open sea under heavy gunfire. When he left the Navy, he worked at Manorbier Camp, before joining the Prison Service. He served at Swansea, Leyhill and Eastwood Park and was well respected by staff and prisoners alike. Upon retirement from the prlson service, he returned home to Penally in 1987. He served on Penally Community Council during the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was chairman for two years. He had a wealth of knowledge, most notably the history of Penally, Celtic and pre-reformation Christianity and rural and sociaI history in general. He was particularly interested in Penally Church, and wrote a comprehensive history of the church. He also had a lifelong interest in nature, geology and farming. He enjoyed talking about all these subjects to those who shared the same interests. He is survived by Carol (wife); Paul and Jane (son and daughter-in-law); Sue and Peter (daughter and son-in-law); Mark, Sion, Leif, Dorian, Christopher, Jago and Jetta (grandchildren). The principal mourners were: Carol (wife); Paul and Jane (son and daughter-in-law); Sue and Peter (daughter and son-in-law), Mark, Sion, Leif (grandchildren); Marion, Alan and Sylvia, Stephen and Sue, Chris and Alan, Daryl and Mandy, Marie (cousins); June and Alun (sister-in-law and brother-in-law). Unable to attend were Christopher, Dorian, Jago and Jetta (grandchildren), Dorothy (cousin) and Bill, Joan and Dave Cook, Joyce Donohue. Canon David Jenkins, assisted by Rev Michael John and Rev Dylan Bate, conducted the service at St Nicholas and St Teilo. Brother Gildas of Caldey Abbey gave a reading. MRS M. C. LEWIS MILFORD HAVEN The funeral took place on Monday, of Mrs Muriel Constance Lewis, of 15 Brooke Avenue, Milford Haven. Mrs Lewis died at Withybush Hospital on May 2nd, aged 84. A native of Milford Haven, she had worked in many different spheres, beginning with war work at the RNAD depot. She is mostly remembered for the part she played in the family milk round with her late husband Jim, and the draper's shop she ran for several years in Brooke Avenue, the street in which she had lived all her life. In her early life she took part in many operettas, musicals and concert parties, under the famed leadership of George and Sybil Hughes. She had a strong sense of family life and in particular took great pleasure in supporting her grandchildren in their activities, from sport to music of all types. Her home was a focal point for the wider family of cousins, who had moved away to Fleetwood, Chester, Malvern and the Isle of Man, and who would frequently visit. She set great store by companionship and friendship and will be missed by a wide circle of friends at North Road Baptist Church and at Milford Haven Bowling Green, where she had served on the ladies committee and was an honorary member. Once a week for many years, on behalf of the Chapel's Sunshine Circle, with her friend Mrs Mary George, she used to take flowers round to those who were ill or bereaved, always stopping to offer a few words of cheer. As well as her own home church, she also on occasions loved to attend the country chapels of Thornton, Marloes, Sandy Hill and Galilee, Llangwm. She was predeceased by her husband Mr Arnold James (Jim) Lewis, in 1980. The funeral at North Road Baptist Church, Milford Haven, on Monday, was followed by interment at Milford Haven Cemetery. Officiating was Rev Paul Bartlett assisted by Rev Ron Price, both of Milford Haven. The bearers were representatives of Milford Haven Bowling Club. She leaves to mourn Margaret and Graham Brace and Anne and Robert Whisby (daughters and sons in law); Sian and Chris, Helen and Chris, Adrian and Stacey, Daniel and Tina, and James (grandchildren and partners); Mrs Dorothy Morris (sister); Mrs May Leggett (sister-in-law); Mr Keith Leggett (brother-in-law); David and Linda Morris (nephew and wife) Michael Morris (nephew); Tony and Toni Leggett (nephew and wife); Pat, Des and Sarah Butler, Alan and Margaret Bell (cousins). Unable to attend were sister-in-law Mrs Vera Lewis, (Canada); cousins Mrs Joan Bell and Mrs Hazel Edwards (Fleetwood), Phyllis and Peter Cooper (Chester), Mrs Margaret Thomas (Isle of Man). There were family flowers only with donations in lieu for the British Heart Foundation and North Road Baptist Church, c/o Nationwide Building Society, 77 Charles Street, Milford Haven. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd, Milford Haven and Neyland.
Mrs M. G. Pritchard Milford Haven The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on April 28th, of Myra Gladys Pritchard, aged 77, of Yorke Street Milford Haven. Myra was born in Little Milford, the youngest daughter of Reginald and Margaret Hughes, of Fairview, Freystrop, where she lived until her marriage. She then moved to Cornwall, Somerset and South Africa with her husband, who was in the Royal Navy. They finally made their home in Milford Haven, where they had lived for the past 40 years. They had been married for 48 years. In her youth, Myra was a staunch member of the church and the local concert parties. She was a very keen ballroom dancer which led to her meeting her husband at a dance at the Masonic hall Haverfordwest. She enjoyed sailing, but in her latter years her main interests were her grandchildren and her garden. The funeral service was held last Wednesday at St Justinian's Church, Little Milford, with interment at Freystrop cemetery, Rev Canon John Davies officiating. The chief mourners were her husband, Arthur, Teresa (daughter); Owain and Gethin (grandsons); Janis and Marcus (niece and partner); Ivan (brother in law); Jean (sister-in-law); Irene and Vaughan (sister-in-law and husband); Stephen (nephew); Wendy (niece) and Christopher (great-nephew). Unable to attend due to ill health was her sister, Marjorie. The bearers were Christopher Young, Steven Hughes, James Hawes and Marcus Hecht. Funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.
