Someone has to die before something is done about a dangerous bend in the Haverfordwest to St Davids road, claim councillors.

At a recent city council meeting in St Davids, councillors attacked the county council about the lack of safety measures on the Nine Wells corner.

They claim they have been told that there must be a fatality before there are any substantial improvements.

Residents in St Davids also claim it is too dangerous to let their children walk to school along the A487, where there is a 40mph restriction.

City mayor, Councillor John George criticised the police for not enforcing the speed restriction.

Recent improvements to the Nine Wells bend have not eased safety fears.

Cllr, Shan Williams said: "The improvements haven't made it safer. Waiting for a fatality is ridiculous."

Cllr Dai Chant added: "It is desperately sad that someone has to die before something is done."

Another councillor, said: "The whole point is that we are trying to prevent a fatality from happening."

Worries were also expressed over the safety of school children getting off buses outside Ysgol Dewi Sant.

"The children are stepping off the buses straight onto a main road. It is ridiculous," deputy mayor Beatrice Price said.

A county council representative, said: "For warning lights to be installed there must be a history of road traffic accidents, high speeds or poor visibility.

"Following concern by a local resident and a number of slight accidents, the council laid down anti-skid surfacing at Nine Wells.

"Bend warning signs were also erected and markers were installed.

"The council has not been asked to install flashing lights outside Ysgol Dewi Sant but it would consider a request if one were to be made.
