MR W. J. DAVIES PEMBROKE DOCK The deep respect and affection felt throughout the community for Mr Walford John Davies, of Gwyther Street, Pembroke Dock, was evidenced by the large attendance at his funeral on April 30th. Mr Davies, who was 81, was a retired teacher, former chairman of South Pembrokeshire District Council and mayor of Pembroke. He was actively involved in a number of local organisations, including Pembroke Dock Town Council, Pembroke Dock Royal British Legion, Pembroke Dock Harlequins, Pembroke Dock Civic Society and the local Labour party. Representatives of these organisations and former colleagues and pupils helped to swell the large congregation at St Johns Church. Walford was born at Golden Hill, Pembroke, the son of the late Mr and Mrs Billy Davies, but spent most of his life in Gwyther Street. He was educated at the East End Elementary School, Pembroke and the old County Grammar School, Pembroke Dock, before starting work as a clerk. In August 1942, he was called up for National Service as a gunner in the Royal Artillery and saw active service in Normandy, Holland, Belgium, Ardennes and Hamburg at the Battle of the Bulge. He later served in the Middle East, Egypt and Palestine with Field Marshall Montgommery. He wrote about his Wartime experiences in a book published by the British Legion, An Ordinary Gunner's Life. After the War, Walford trained as a teacher at Trinity College, Carmarthen. He spent the first four years of his career teaching in Nuneaton, where he was secretary of Nuneaton WEA. In 1954, Walford was appointed to Llanion School, where he taught until its amalgamation with Albion Square Junior School to form Pembroke Dock Junior School in the 1970s. Walford retired from Pembroke Dock Junior School in 1983. Walford had a great love of travel and visited many parts of the world with his late wife Connie, whom he met in the south of France in 1958 and married on Christmas Eve 1959. They were a devoted couple and Connie was a tremendous support to Walford during his terms in office as mayor of Pembroke in 1983 and chairman of South Pembrokeshire District Council in 1985. Walford was a keen reader and had a keen interest in local history and was a wonderful ambassador for Pembroke Dock with his great knowledge and dry sense of humour. He served as a local councillor for a number of years only retiring from Pembroke Dock Town Council last December. Following Connie's death in 1998, Walford was often accompanied at council functions and on his travels by his close friend Pat. Walford had not enjoyed good health in the past few months, during which time he was treated at Withybush Hospital and cared for by his daughter Britt at her home. The service at St Johns Church was conducted by the vicar, Rev Andrew Davies, who later officiated at Parc Gwyn Crematorium. The coffin was draped in the Union Jack and accompanied by the Royal British Legion Standard Bearer. The lesson was read by Tony Mason of the Royal British Legion and a eulogy was given by a Iong-time friend, Vernon Scott. The organist was Veronica Dyde. The bearers were Roy Scourfield, Lennie Scourfield, Berry Rogers, David Street representing Pembroke Dock Harlequins. The chief mourners were: Britt and Phil Burley (daughter and son-in-law), Liam, Sarah and Alex (grandchildren), Tony Smith, Barbara Morris, Mr Ken Phillips (cousins), Mrs Pat Huxter, Clare Pugh (close friends). Unable to attend were Duncan and Edwina (grandchildren) and the Van-der-Velde-Nowak and Janssens families from Belgium. There were family flowers only by request, but donations in lieu for ward ten Withybush Hospital, may be sent to the funeral director Neil Roberts at 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock.

MR E. J. DUIGNAN PEMBROKE DOCK The funeral took place on April 28th, with a service at St Mary's Catholic Church, Pembroke Dock, of Mr Edward John Duignan (Ted), of 70 Gwyther Street, Pembroke Dock, who had died on April 24th, aged 90. Father John Dermody conducted the service, which was followed by interment at Llanion Cemetery, Pembroke Dock. The bearers were Stephen Duignan, Stephen Butler, Richard Duignan, Paul Farmahan, Sanjay Farmahan, Tony Farmahan. He is survived by his wife Margaret Elizabeth Duignan (Gretta). The chief mourners were Gretta Duignan (wife); Terry Duignan (son), Teresa Butler (daughter), Sheila Farmahan (daughter) and their partners; Frank Duignan (brother); Pat Alyson (sister); peter Duignan (brother); grandchildren Stephen Duignan, Stephen Butler, Michelle, Mark, Julie, Richard, Lucy, Paul, Sanjay, Tony. Mr Duignan served in the RAF during the War and was a member of the RAFA Club. Donations in lieu of flowers to League of Friends, South Pembs Hospital.

MR L. F. PILGRIM ROCH The funeral took place on April 22nd, at St Mary's Church, Roch, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, of Mr Leslie Frank Pilgrim, of 8 Castle Close, Roch. Mr Pilgrim died on April 16th at Withybush Hospital, where he had been a patient for four weeks. He was 82. Rev Michael Rowlands officiated. Mr Pilgrim served in the Royal Navy, as a torpedo man and then on mine sweepers, from 1941 to 1945, then on maintenance staff, Prudential Assurance Head Office, Holborn Bars and an electrician with Clough Smith, Brawdy. His interests were his home and garden. He was a member of Haverfordwest Bowling Club, where he was a popular member and he enjoyed many happy hours, and a member of the British Legion, Milford Haven, and a member of Haverfordwest Cricket Club. He enjoyed days out all over Pembrokeshire to see as much of the county as he could. His life was built around his home and family and he will be sadly missed. He leaves to mourn his wife Lilian, son John; Teresa Verani and Hanif Verani (granddaughter), Gary and Louise Pilgrim (grandson), Neil Pilgrim (grandson). The bearers were John Pilgrim (son), Gary and Neil Pilgrim (grandsons), Hanif Verani (grandson-in-law). Principal mourners were: Lilian (wife); John Pilgrim (son); Teresa Verani (granddaughter) and husband Hanif Verani; Gary Pilgrim (grandson) and wife Louise; Neil (grandson); Olive Morgan; Dilwyn Morgan and wife Pat; Jean and Martin Doyle (niece and husband); Michael Clarkson (nephew). Unable to attend due to ill health were sisters Celia Taylor, Maud Robinson and Bet Parry. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.

MRS S. C. MORGAN FISHGUARD The funeral has taken place of Mrs Sarah Ceinwen Morgan, of Shans, Wallis Street, Fishguard, who died at Ridgeway Nursing Home, Llawhaden, on April 28th, aged 96. Born in Little Newcastle into a large family, she spent her early years in Rosebush before moving into Fishguard on her marriage to Philip Morgan (Jeff) in 1939. Ceinwen ran a guest house in Fishguard for many years and was very active at St Mary's Church, being a member of the PCC and Mothers' Union. She had also supported her husband's work with the National School, Sea Cadets and Freemasonry. Ceinwen was received into St Mary's Church on Thursday evening and the funeral service on Friday was conducted by Rev Don McGregor, followed by interment at St Mary's cemetery. The bearers were Randall Morris, Roy Morris, Richard Jenkins, Ian Williams, Arthur Bean and Vivian Foot. The Sea Cadets provided a Guard of Honour. Principal mourners were: Perys (daughter); Owen, Austen and Louise (grandchildren); Rhin, Maldwyn and Melrose, Lillah and David, Lona, Dilys, Eirlys and Hywel, Delano, Denzil, Brynsley, Kieth, Doris, Terry and Hafwen, Michelle, Lyn and Sandra (nephews and nieces) and Anne (friend). MR D. ELLIOTT HAKIN The funeral took place at St David's Church, Hubberston, on Monday, with interment at Thornton Cemetery, of Mr Dennis Elliott, of 41 Nelson Avenue, Hakin, who had died aged 78 on Monday, May 9th. Rev Alan Chadwick officiated. Mr Elliott was a native of Hull, Yorkshire. He did National Service in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, serving in India and Palestine. He worked as a trawler man out of Milford Haven, a long-distance lorry driver and an accomplished chef. He retired from Taylor Plan Amoco Refinery, where he worked as catering manager, due to ill health at 49. His interests were historic painting in oils and watercolours, cooking, RAOB, RWF Veteran Association, auctions and charity work. He leaves to mourn his wife Dorothy (Dot) Margaret Elliott; Mike and Janet Baker (son); Tony and Linda Elliott (son), Richard and Lorna Elliott (son), Carol and Stewart Laugharne (daughter); grandchildren: Ian and Catherine Baker, Julie-Ann, Dan and Sally-Ann Elliott, Thomas, Harry, George Elliott, Michaela, Nikki, Kerris Laugharne; great-grandchildren: Sophie and Jessica Drake; brother John and Celia Elliott; Geofrey (deceased) and wife Eugenie; Dilwen and Robert Stow (brothers-in-law). MR C. B. G. SAYERS HAKIN The funeral took place on Friday, at Hubberston Church, Gelliswick Road, Hubberston, with cremation at Parc Gwyn, of Mr Cyril Bryan George Sayers (Sid), of 47 Nelson Avenue, Hakin, Milford Haven. He was 68 and died on May 8th at Withybush Hospital. Rev Alan Chadwick officiated and the bearers were Bryan Sayers (son), Matthew Salter, Adam Salter (grandsons), and Dai Burton (chairman of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers). Mr Sayers was a stonemason, but he did National Service in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, serving in Cyprus, Malta and Berlin. He returned to stonemasonry after his National Service. He retired in 1990 as foreman at Haverfordwest Council, due to ill health. His main interests were gardening, military history, walking his dog and his social life. Left to mourn are Sandra Sayers (wife), Bryan Sayers, Jo-Ann Salter (children); Matthew, Adam, Sarah Salter, Liam (grandchildren); Louie and Cora (brother and sister-in-law); Pauline and Ted (sister and brother-in-law); Olive and John (sister and brother-in-law); Janine (sister), Doreen (sister) and numerous other family members. MRS J. RICHARDSON JOHNSTON The death occurred of Mrs Joan Richardson, ne Evans, of Pope Hill House, Johnston. The funeral took place at St Peter's Church, Johnston, on Tuesday, May 10th, and was conducted by the Venerable Graham Davies, followed by interment at Pope Hill Cemetery. Her husband Don, was too ill to attend. Joan was the elder daughter of Mr and Mrs Thorley Evans, of Pope Hill House. When she met Don he was a Navy Flier at Brawdy, seeing action in the Suez Conflict. On leaving the Navy he became a Pilot Captain with Monarch Airlines. They spent most of their married life at Harpenden, returning home three years ago. In attendance were many family and friends. Family mourners were: Mr and Mrs George Grey (sister and brother-in-law); Diane Kerr (niece); Jill and John McGarry (niece and husband); many cousins, including Mrs Gwen Thomas, Mr and Mrs Elvet Jenkins, Mrs Barbara Skone, Mrs Sally Evans, Mrs Gwen Davies, Mrs Judith Richards, and Mrs Brenda Harries. The organist was Mrs Gwendolin James. Additional music was provided by Mr Jon McGarry and Mary Murchinson. The bearers were Stephen and Richard Thomas, Richard Skone and John McGarry. Graham Davies and Roy Folland and Sons organised the service.

MRS E. A. KNIGHT MATHRY Mrs Elizabeth Awena Knight (known as Awena) of Clawddeam, Mathry, died on April 26th, at Withybush Hospital after a long illness. She was 62. Awena was born at Hill Farm, Houghton, then moved to Ffynnongain, Penffordd. Her parents finally settled at Heathfield, Letterston, in the early 1950s, where Awena grew up and which, on the death of her parents, she farmed in partnership with her brother. In 1980, Awena married Mike, and they moved to Clawddeam shortly afterwards, where they farmed together. They had two children, Sarah and Hywel. In her younger days, Awena was an active member of Fishguard Young Farmers' Club. In later years, her interests included her family and cooking. She enjoyed success with her baking (particularly for her sponges) in local shows, including the County Show and Hayscastle Show. Awena was also passionate about her farming and was well known and respected within farming circles, as borne out by the large number of people who attended her funeral, which took place on May 3rd, at Blaenllyn Chapel, Mathry. Following a private family service at the house, the funeral service and interment in the adjoining cemetery was officiated by Rev Aled Jenkins, assisted by Rev E. Jones. Mrs L. E. I. WILLIAMS PEMBROKE The funeral of Linda Elsie Irene Williams took place on Friday at the Haven Church in Pembroke. Linda died on May 6th. She was 59. Linda was a well-known and respected business lady having founded Parfitts Carpets in Pembroke Dock 30 years ago. She was a member of the Haven Evangelical Church in Pembroke as well as a Sunday school teacher, an active supporter of overseas mission work in Africa and a friend to everyone. She leaves to mourn her husband Dave; James and Jane, Stephen and Joss and Anthony and Maria (sons and daughters-in-law); Luke, Hannah, George, Cameron and Chloe (grandchildren); Jean (mother) and Shirley and June (sisters) and other family and friends too numerous to mention.

MRS B. E. GLADWIN LLANDISsILIO Beatrice Emmiline Gladwin (ne Morgan), affectionately known as Beattie, died recently at Withybush Hospital, aged 91. She was predeceased by her husband Ted in February 1999. She was a native of Begelly, spending her early years at The Gate and also at the Begelly Arms with her grandparents. At the age of 14, she entered service in Shrewsbury and, as head cook, she met her husband, Ted. They married in November 1939. Due to the war, Beattie came back home to Pembrokeshire to take up the position of head cook at Narberth Grammar School. During this time she would cook meals not only for the local schoolchildren but for the evacuees. After the war, she and Ted set up home at Forest Farm, Narberth. In 1952 they moved to Bachsylw Farm near Login with their daughter Janet. Since then they moved to Pen y Feidir, Llandissilio, where they farmed with their daughter Janet and grandson Lester. Beattie lived for her home and her family, she was an outstanding cook and the welcome received at Pen y Feidir was legendary. Family left to mourn are her daughter Janet, grandson and girlfriend, Lester and Sara. There was a private service at the Chapel of Rest in Clynderwen with the funeral taking place at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, with Rev Dylan Bates of Begelly officiating. The bearers were Meredith James, Picton James, Richard Griffiths and David Parry-Williams. The principal mourners were: Janet, Lester and Sara; brothers and sister Flo Stevens, Cyril Morgan, Hubert and Jean Morgan, Janice Webb and family; cousins, Marlene John, Jennifer Phillips, Brian and Nest Morgan and families. Funeral leaflets were handed out by James Bellarby and Robert Hughes. Donations in lieu of flowers will be accepted towards blood pressure equipment (Dynamap) for ward three at Withybush Hospital and should be sent to W. J. Kenneth Davies, Bleanwern, Clynderwen. Mr Davies carried out the funeral arrangements.

MR B. H. J. DAVIES BRYNBERIAN There was a large attendance of family, friends, neighbours and customers at the funeral on April 23rd of Mr B. H. J. (Hugh) Davies, of Eisteddfa-Arthur, Brynberian. Mr Davies, who was 60, died at home. After leaving school, he worked on his home farm, Blaenwern, later helping to develop the contracting business, Davies Bros. In 1992, he started his own business, working with the Case digger, which he loved, and he worked many hours a day on it. Hugh was a regular attendee at Smyrna Chapel, Puncheston, where he was a deacon. Singing was his main interest and in earlier years, he was a member of Haverfordwest Male Voice Choir. The funeral service at Smyrna Chapel, Puncheston, was followed by interment at Jabes Cemetery, Cwm Gwaun, led by Mr Alwyn Daniels. The bearers were Berian Davies, Ken Davies, Mark Davies, Llew Rees, Dylan Rees, and Eric Lewis, loyal friends. The principal mourners were: wife Anne Davies; daughter Rhian Hill; son Ben Davies; stepdaughter, Mandy; son-in-law Mathew Hill; and grandsons Jon and Osian. As the eldest sibling of four, Hugh also leaves to mourn his brothers Dai Davies and Ken Davies, sister Ann Hughes, brother-in-law Brian Hughes and sister-in-law Janette Davies, nieces Sian Price and family and Jessica Davies, and nephew Andrew Davies and family. MR H. E. KERR JOHNSTON A very well-known and popular figure in the Milford Haven fishing industry and in local sporting circles, Hugh Edward Kerr, died aged 82 at his home, 32 Greenhall Park, Johnston, on May 7th. A native of Thornton, Mr Kerr was engaged in the fishing industry for 53 years, having been manager of W. H. Kerr, the family firm of trawler owners, and secretary to the Trawler Owners' Association. Called up in 1941, he served for five years as a Leading Aircraftman in the RAF during the war and saw service in India. A skilled footballer, he was a member of the highly successful post-war Milford United Robins, a team which boasted such names as 'Bull' Best, Ken Seago and Johnny King. A former chairman of Johnston Parish Council, he was also one time treasurer of Johnston Institute. Left to mourn are his wife Margaret; daughters and sons-in-law Carol and John Smith, Lynn and Terry Hazell; daughter Fiona Picton; grandchildren, husbands and partners Debbie and Chris, Nikki and Simon, Ian and Danielle, Lisa and Edward, Marion, Jamie and Ceri; and four great grandchildren together with cousins, nephews, nieces and sisters-in-law. Funeral services at the house and later at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, on Thursday, were conducted by Rev Martyn Evans and Rev John Welsby and the bearers were his grandsons Ian Hazell and Jamie Picton. MR D. E. BUSBY SAUNDERSFOOT The death occurred after a two-week stay at Withybush Hospital, of Derrick Edward Busby, of 4 Westfield Road, Saundersfoot. He was 68. Mr Busby was a native of London, and moved to Saundersfoot in 1959. He was the manager of Chemist Inn for a number of years and after re-training he worked as an instrument technician for National Power, Pembroke, until he had to retire through bad health. Derrick's main interests were fishing, darts and Saundersfoot football club and, in later years, his family, particularly his grandchildren. He leaves to mourn: Jane (wife); Dave and Nicky (son and daughter-in-law); Nina and Mick (daughter and son-in-law); Leanne, Jess, Kim, Dom and Matty (grandchildren); Brenda and Roy (sister and brother-in-law); Olwen, Miriam, Basil, Winston and Janet (brothers and sisters-in-law); many cousins, nephews and nieces. MR H. G. JAMES NARBERTH Herbert Glyn James, of Woodview, Amroth Road, Narberth, died at his home on May 1st, aged 78. Mr James was a native of Llanteg and had served in the Parachute Regiment. He had worked mainly in farming and in later life he ran a caravan site at Woodview. His main interest was football and he was church warden at St Lawrence church, Marros. Predeceased by his wife Maud, he leaves to mourn: Roland (son); Yvonne (daughter); Jennifer and Carol (daughters-in-law); Mark, Andrew, John, Michael and Matthew (grandsons); Melonie and Linzi (granddaughters); Jack, Shay, Luke, Jordon, Sasha and Caitlin (great grandchildren); Stephen (grandson-in-law); Shona and Michelle (granddaughters-in-law). MR J. I. THOMAS KILGETTY The death occurred on May 1st at Withybush Hospital, of John Ira Thomas, of 18 Kilvelgy Park, Kilgetty. He was 81. Mr Thomas was a native of Bridgend and had worked at the steelworks in Port Talbot. He then ran his own business, J. and P. Thomas Electrical Contractors, but due to ill-health he joined his wife Pearl and worked in the Post Office and shop at Bryntiriow, Bridgend. John served with the REME and his main interests were classical music and boating. Family left to mourn are: Pearl Thomas (wife); Paul and Ann (son and daughter); Susan (daughter-in-law); Neil, Sarah, Dean, Katie and Mathew (grandchildren); Dylan and Evan (great-grandchildren). The funeral took place on May 6th at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was conducted by Rev Donald Davies. The bearers were Neil Thomas, Dean Thomas, Mathew Davies and Paul Roberts. Principal mourners were: Pearl (wife); Paul (son); Ann (daughter); Susan (daughter-in-law); Neil, Sarah, Dean, Katie and Mathew (grandchildren); Lyndsey, Leah, Vera and Flora (sisters-in-law). There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu for Arthritis Research and Tenby Surgery, c/o Stewart Treharne of E. C. Thomas and Son, funeral directors, Archways, Green Plains, Stepaside, Narberth, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

MR C. WAITE PEMBROKE DOCK The death occurred on April 27th at Withybush Hospital, after a short illness, of Cyril Waite, of Military Road, Pennar, Pembroke Dock. He was 72. Originally from Pudsey, West Yorkshire, Cyril and his family moved to Pembrokeshire in 1983. Cyril loved using his computer and helped various charitable organisations with his knowledge and creative abilities. Cyril and his wife Margaret would have celebrated their ruby wedding anniversary this year. He leaves to mourn his wife Margaret Jean; son Garry and fiance Claire and his first grandchild, Zak Phillip, aged two months. The funeral took place on May 5th with a service at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, conducted by Rev Elwyn John. The principal mourners were: Margaret, Garry and Claire, together with many other family members and friends from many parts of the country. The funeral arrangements were carried out by John Roberts and Son, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock.

MR E. K. WOOD FISHGUARD The funeral took place on May 6th, of Eric K. Wood, of 3 Garn Fawr, Fishguard, who died at Morriston Hospital on April 30th, aged 73. Eric was well known locally from his time as a shop proprietor, when he owned and ran his business Woods of Treffgarne. He also had a great interest in Shetland ponies, showing and driving them. This was a hobby he shared with his late wife Blanche, who he cared for during her long illness prior to her death in 1998. In latter years he found companionship with Mair. The principal mourners were: Martin and Jane, Russell and Debbie (sons and daughters-in-law); Karen and David (daughter and son-in-law); Julie, David, Matthew, Joseph, Oliver, Richard, Daniel and Emily (grandchildren); Jamie-Lee and Sophie (great-grandchildren). There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu in aid of the renal unit, Morriston, sent to Mr Alan Bain, Penrhiw, Puncheston. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr F. G. Rees, Portfield Gate, Haverfordwest.

MRS J. E. JONES CAERPHILLY (formerly of Haverfordwest) The death occurred on May 9th, at the Miner's Hospital, Caerphilly, of Janie Elizabeth Jones. She was 76. Janie, the wife of Donald, who predeceased her in September, 2004, will be missed by her family and friends. She leaves to mourn her sister, Cecilia; brother, Bernard and their families. The funeral took place at St Martin's church, Caerphilly on May 16th and was followed by cremation at Thornhill Crematorium, Cardiff.
