DEAR EDITOR, - I must take issue with you about the Comment column (May 4th), Keep gun laws strict.
Your insinuation that people who participate in any form of shooting as a sport must somehow be held responsible for allowing guns to fall into the wrong hands and thus be used illegally, does not do justice to your normally fair and unbiased newspaper.
People who hold firearm certificates are some of the most law-abiding members of society. We have to be - any slight indiscretion which might result in criminal charges would cause our firearm certificate to be revoked by the police.
I realise that your Comment was fuelled by the injury that was sustained by a local schoolboy, while walking home from school in Pembroke and I sincerely hope that the culprit is caught, punished, and hopefully re-educated about the correct use of any type of weapon.
There are several target shooting clubs in our area where young people, who are interested in shooting as a legitimate sport, will be taught self-control, self-discipline, and weapon and range safety.
