DEAR EDITOR, - What became of Percy James?
When the Spanish Civil War broke out in July 1936, two young men from west Wales volunteered to defend the Spanish republic.
Arthur Morris and Percy James were among the 40,000 volunteers who joined the International Brigades to fight in Spain.
Arthur Morris was born and grew up in Cardigan and was killed near Madrid in February 1937. Although he had been in Spain for less than a month, his time was well documented in battalion records.
Percy M. James came from Tivy Bank or (Tivy Bach) near Crymych, the son of a well known agricultural produce merchant, Mr D. James.
He emigrated to Canada in 1927 and appears to have settled in Vancouver.
He fought in Spain and was captured by Franco's forces. Little is known of Percy James after his repatriation to Britain in 1939, and at present we can only speculate whether he eventually returned to Crymych or Canada.
I would therefore be grateful if readers could cast any light on what became of him, as I am unable to trace his movements after the war in Spain ended.
