Brothers Jim and Sean Boswell were the undoubted stars of Pembroke Amateur Boxing Club's show held at the Pater Hall, Pembroke Dock, recently.
Both overturned recent decisions against tough opposition from Cardiff to be acclaimed by a packed and appreciative audience who watched 11 evenly matched bouts in a veritable feast of amateur boxing.
Jim took on Kyle Chapman, of Splott ABC, in the capital, who had beaten him to grab the Welsh championship recently at St Clears, and showed what he thought of that verdict with a superb display of skills and an 18-11 decision that also earned him the special award as the best boxer of the night, adjudged by Telegraph sports editor, Gordon Thomas.
Sean Boswell had boxed just before brother Jim against current Welsh champion Chris Ellery, also of Splott, and boxed well to overturn his narrow defeat in the championships.
Sean was actually trailing at the end of the second round but showed his potential as he produced the goods in the final round, jabbing really well and following up with some good combinations to ease home by 16-13 on the judges scorecards.
It was a marvellous decision for Sean and few would disagree with the decision made by Gordon Thomas that earned both boxers a special trophy for the best bout of the night.
There was a chance of a family treble because another brother, John, also took part in a youth contest against Joshua Dennis, of Gwent ABC.
It was an action-packed bout where the Pembroke boxer gave as good as he got, but was shaded out by 35-33 against a strong opponent.
Preseli ABC youngster Luke Evans got the evening off to a good start with his contest against Sean Lewis of the Gwent club, but was shaded out on points, as was Pembroke's Lee Waggenes, who could consider himself unlucky when Kieran Bowden edged home by 9-8 to make it three wins for Gwent ABC.
Two other young talents to watch out for in the future are Rudie and Tommy Lee Jones, who both gained deserved victories against strong opponents. Rudie outboxed Ross Price, from the Heads, of the Valley ABC near Merthyr, while Tommy Lee gained an excellent points decision over Josh Taylor, of Cwmavon Hornets ABC.
The evening ended with three senior bouts where Pembroke boxers lost on points, all of them by narrow margins where the decision could have gone either way.
Peter Harrison marked his debut against James Evans (Towy ABC) with some good jabs but ran out of steam in the third round. Jadey Hearn lost narrowly to Ian Jenkins (Cwmgors) and Jamie Ambler made the long journey back to Aberystwyth, having edged home against Pembroke's Mark Davies.
Pembroke ABC head coach Ralph Gammer was delighted by the support provided by so many clubs, several making long journeys to ensure the evening's success, and the sponsorship provided by the following: Old Cross Saws; Prince of Wales; Central Motor Parts; Dolphin Hotel; Mustang Marine; Liberty's; First and Last; Three Crowns; Mr Roberts; Bird 'n Hand; Bierspool Bikes; Bierspool Diner; A to B Cars; Trant; Pembroke Town Council; Steven Blunston Electrics; Power Station Club; Paddles; Bush Tavern; Caledonia Inn; Tasty House; Kevin, Albion Stores; The Charlton; Hasty Bites; Lion Hotel; Bush Hill Service Station; Apley Lodge and Pembroke Haven Residential Homes; West Wales Containers; Cen Lewis Car and Commercial Sales; AJ Odlin, Painter and Decorator; Lee and Carl Wagnes.
