A Fishguard couple's quest to convert a disused church into their dream home is the focus of Channel 4's Restoration Man tonight (Sunday).
Gareth Williams, his partner Jill Austin and their two sons, aged nine and seven, were sick of living in a terraced house and dreamt of owning a unique home for their family.
They bought a disused Victorian Church in the Llanreithan, surrounded by a working graveyard.
Despite having no previous building experience, Sculptor Gareth gave up work as a sign writer to dedicate all his time to the build, while Jill juggled two part time jobs to keep money coming in With only limited building experience, a shoestring budget and lots if red tape the couple set themselves a real challenge.
A tiny budget forced Gareth to source most of his materials from e-bay.
Architect and presenter George Clarke was on hand to help with designs, advise Gareth how to overcome the pitfalls of church conversions and give the family much needed support when the stresses of the build begin to take their huge toll.
George was amazed by Gareth’s resourcefulness when it comes to sourcing materials.
"This is restoration by e-bay," he says, "and the results are truly amazing."
Restoration Man, Church, is on Channel 4 at 9pm tonight.
