Work is due to start on enhancing Hubberston's community play area by the end of this month, thanks to a £20,000 grant from Pembrokeshire County Council. The play area is now set to add a spider’s web, cone climber and adventure trail for youngsters to enjoy. The funding will also be used to secure fencing around the area and for landscaping and groundworks.

Members of the council's cabinet voted unanimously in favour of passing a proposal by Dr Steven Jones, the authority’s director of development, to give £20,000 towards the work.

In September last year, Councillor Mark Hawkins submitted an application for funding to the council on behalf of the Hubberston Community Association.

Cllr Hawkins, who has been at the forefront of the play area’s development since it was established seven years ago, said it was “brilliant” news for the group.

“All the funding is now in place for work to go ahead,” he said.

“It’s a worthwhile project and is one of the best play areas in Pembrokeshire “It’s good for the community and is well supported. It’s not just something for the people of Hubberston any more but for the whole surrounding area.”

Cllr Hawkins said one of the main benefits the play area had brought to the local community was the reduction in antisocial behaviour, and he also praised local youngsters for keeping it in good condition.

“When it was put together, the children were told they would have to look after it and they have. It’s allowed us to develop the area and I have to thank Pembrokeshire County Council for backing us.

“We really appreciate their support and will make sure it is money well spent for them.”
