A Milford Haven man said he got "wound up on alcohol" when he was asked to explain why he had threatened and punched a police officer, a court heard yesterday (Tuesday).

Terrence Coe, of 34 Howarth Close, pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting a constable and using threatening behaviour.

Prosecutor Ellie Morgan said police were called to a house in Lawrence Close, Hakin, on the evening of January 30th. She said once they arrived at the property, a woman opened the door and told them that Coe was in the living room but refusing to leave.

"Officers escorted him out of the house and one continued walking behind him," she said.

"The defendant then turned around and punched the officer, and after being arrested continued to swear and threaten him.

"The officer involved suffered a cut and swelling to his mouth and his glasses were broken."

Upon being interviewed by police, Coe said he had visited two pubs before the incident and couldn't remember arriving at his fiancée's address.

"He said he got wound up on alcohol," said Ms Morgan.

She added that Coe, aged 47, had a record of violence, and had previously been charged with actual bodily harm and common assault.

Defence lawyer Mark Layton said his client did not dispute the facts read out by the prosecution: "He's not in a position to do so, as he remembers nothing because of the effects of the alcohol that night," he said.

Mr Layton added that Coe had not inflicted a long term injury on the victim and although he had two actual bodily harm offences on his record, they took place 20 and eight years ago respectively.

Magistrates told Coe they would need a view a full pre sentence report, and ordered him to return to Haverfordwest magistrates court on Monday, March 15th.

He was released on bail on the condition he co-operated fully with the probation service.
