The sky above Clynderwen was lit up by 106 Chinese lanterns on Friday, to celebrate the 106th birthday of local resident, Bessie Phillips.
Mrs Phillips, who has lived in Clynderwen all her life, attributes her longevity to "simple plain living and a bit of luck".
The 106-year-old still lives in her own home, supported by her daughter, three grand children and three great grandchildren.
She originally worked as a seamstress in Clunderwen Emporium, and until the age of 100 enjoyed working with her hands, producing intricate knitted toys and dolls.
She is still a keen reader and takes the Western Telegraph weekly, the Western Mail daily. She also enjoys the stories and puzzles in Take a Break and Women's Weekly magazines.
"She tells me what's happening in the news," said her daughter Sadie Davies.
Bessie spent her birthday in front of the fire at home, surrounded by friends and family enjoying sherry, cake and countless presents and cards.
That evening 106 Chinese lanterns, each of which raised £5 for Cancer Research, were launched from Clynderwen playing field in her honour.
