Dear Editor
I refer to your lead article on January 27th regarding the threat to Chevron. I read with dismay the potential impact upon the local work force and economy.
However, what really stood out for me was the concern shown by our political representatives - all four of them.
When as a youngster I began to gain some political awareness, the good people of Pembrokeshire were well represented by a single member of parliament. We now have two in addition to two assembly members.
Clearly then we have benefitted in terms of our county experiencing growth, and environmental and social improvements?
Not at all. At a time when the public sector workforce is set to be significantly cut, public expenditure has to shrink and we are all set to suffer the consequences, are we getting value for money?
I would agree that our political masters in London and Cardiff look close to home for ways to trim the public purse. Four into one does not go - but it is a very expensive framework for running the country, a high cost democracy.
