Dear Editor

I noticed in a recent edition of the Western Telegraph, there was report which indicated that Pembrokeshire would soon benefit from a scheme to provide acute nursing care within patients’ homes so as to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions.

May I urge all potential patients in the county to take advantage of this service, which has been operating in the Cardiff and Vale Health area for the past five years.

In March last year I was diagnosed by my GP with severe cellulitis in my left leg. I was rushed into Llandough Hospital where I underwent many tests to ensure that I did not have a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Once it was confirmed that there were no complications, I was given the choice of admission to hospital or a return home where I would to be treated by the Cardiff and Vale acute response team.

I received regular visits from highly qualified, experienced and committed nursing staff.

Throughout my treatment I was able to move around the house and live a fairly normal life. I was so impressed by the quality of my treatment and the freedom I enjoyed.

When the scheme is up and running, I would recommend it to anyone, instead of having to take up a hospital bed unnecessarily.

You will not regret your decision.
