A Pembroke man is taking "massive steps forward" despite appearing in court for drugs possession, according to his defence lawyer.

Christopher Brockway, of 30 Southdown Close, pleaded guilty to possessing 1.1 grams of cannabis at Haverfordwest magistrates court yesterday (Tuesday).

Prosecutor Ellie Morgan said officers executed a drugs warrant at Brockway's home address on December 22nd, and found the cannabis in a cupboard in the living room.

"The defendant said he was going to smoke it but that he'd rather not say who it was from," said Ms Morgan.

"Police valued the amount at £6.28 and he said he paid £5 for it."

She added Brockway had ten previous drugs convictions.

Defence lawyer Katie Hanson admitted her client had endured a number of problems with substances in the past, but said spending time in custody last year had proved a wake up call.

"He now doesn't drink or go out. He smokes cannabis infrequently and in the privacy of his own home."

She said he had recently found employment on a demolition team: "This is a massive step forward for him. He is no longer using serious substances and I think a conditional discharge for this offence would mark the fact he's turned over a new leaf."

The magistrates agreed with Ms Hanson's suggestion and Brockway was given a conditional discharge for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay £85 in prosecution costs.
