A woman has died following a collision involving a car and Saturday's 08.30 Manchester to Milford Haven train.

British Transport Police (BTP) are investigating the incident where two vehicles were struck by a train on a level crossing at Moreton on Lugg in Hereford at 10.34am.

The occupants of the first vehicle, a husband and wife, were taken to hospital. The woman sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital where she died. She was named by police as local woman Jane Harding aged 52.

Her husband was taken to hospital by ambulance where he was treated for minor injuries.

The second vehicle contained a female driver and her 12 year old daughter, they were taken to hospital by ambulance where they were treated for shock.

There were no injuries to passengers on board the train, although a number were treated for shock at the scene.

BTP officers are currently working with West Mercia Police and Network Rail to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision which is currently unknown. RAIB, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch has been informed.

"We will be interviewing the train driver, the drivers and passengers in the cars involved and any other witnesses in an attempt to build up a fuller picture of events," said Chief Inspector Marshall of British Transport Police. "But at this stage we remain open minded about the cause of the collision."
