A Pembroke Dock woman has proved that, despite the recession, jobs are still available.

Claire Draper became unemployed from her cleaning job in December 2008. She claimed Jobseeker’s Allowance at Pembroke Dock Jobcentre and started to look for work.

As the weeks passed, Claire became disheartened as employers either rejected her applications or did not even reply.

Last August Claire’s personal adviser Fran Dunne found her a place on a job-search workshop.

Fran then talked to Claire about the possibility of working in the adult care sector.

Even though she had already gained some experience as a youth worker, Claire had never considered this before. Fran made Claire aware of a two-week Care First Careers course. Although Claire was initially reluctant to commit to this training as she did not think she had the right skills, she trusted Fran’s judgement and took a chance that the job would suit her.

After the course she applied for a job at Ashdale Residential and Nursing Home, was interviewed and offered a job.

Claire said “I’m really pleased that Fran persuaded me to consider a job in care – otherwise I would still be an unemployed cleaner. The course made me realise that I already had the skills to do this type of work but completing the course gave me the extra confidence I needed.

“But I’m not finishing there, as by doing an NVQ I’m going to continue learning while working.”

Claire was given another helping hand as Jobcentre Plus also paid for the mandatory criminal records bureau check and also suitable clothing – all of which she needed so she could start work.

Her new employer will benefit from a recruitment subsidy available to employers who take on long-term unemployed customers.
