The commitment of Pembrokeshire's fire fighters has been commended today (Monday), after they braved a practically inaccessible road to tackle a chimney fire yesterday evening.

"It was like something out of Ice Truckers," said an onlooker.

An appliance from Fishguard and a 4x4 vehicle from Haverfordwest were called to the fire in Trecwn's Barham Road at 6.21pm.

The fire appliance was unable to get to the property but firefighters reached the scene on foot, carrying small gear and chimney rods to extinguish the blaze.

They also employed a thermal imaging camera to make sure that no hot spots remained in the roof space.

With the fire safely extinguished Fishguard crew then faced the difficult task of getting the appliance back up Barham Road, which is covered in compacted ice.

"The road is atrocious. Conditions are really poor here," said one resident of the privately owned road.

"We haven't had post or coal deliveries in a week. Most people take one look at the road and think 'I'm not going up there'.

"But fair play, the fire service came up here. I thought it was good that they even tried to come up."

The onlooker described how it took Fishguard crew an hour and a half to get back up the road.

Fire fighters had to make holes in the ice with pick axes so their tyres could get more grip. A tractor from the nearby depot also came up with salt to put on the road in front of the fire engine.

Fire fighters eventually returned to station at 9.15pm.

"We do our best," said Pembrokeshire county commander Nick Webley. "It is out duty to come out and we will make every effort to tackle fires using the equipment we have been provided with.

"Credit must go to Fishguard watch manager Dai Jones and his crew for their efforts last night."
