Dear Editor:
The proposal to abolish cheques by 2018 will, if adopted, limit methods of payment to cash, card and computer, unless postal orders are spared.
The advantage of cheques is that the signatory knows immediately, assuming he or she puts the amount and balance on the stub, how much is going out and how much is left. It is not like paying by card in person on the phone or via computer.
Paying by card positively encourages debt. We need a move away from ‘easy’ payment, not another move towards it.
Easy payment results in unpleasant demands and statements at the turn of the month.
The nation is deeply in debt as it is. Let us not add to it.
