More than half of Pembrokeshire’s schools were closed today (Wednesday) due to bitterly cold weather, roads made impassable by snow and ice and in one case a lack of pupils.
A total of 42 schools were closed to pupils and all school transport services were cancelled throughout the county.
31 schools were open with four of these being open under special provisions; Fenton was only open to year one pupils upwards, while Broad Haven, Haverfordwest VC and Llangwm asked pupils to bring a packed lunch as canteens were closed.
Pembrokeshire County Council's behavioural support units were also closed.
An Inset day at St Davids Secondary School, which was to have an Inset day today, was cancelled, with the school being closed to all staff and students..
A 'transition day' for primary school pupils, which was also to have taken place at the school today, was also cancelled. It will be re-arranged at a later date.
Pembrokeshire College was also closed for the second day running.
Hubert Mathias, Pembrokeshire County Council’s transport and fleet manager, praised the bus drivers and taxi drivers who managed to get 6,000 pupils home from school yesterday (Tuesday) in difficult and hazardous conditions.
“They showed a lot of perseverance, and I’d like to thank them for their efforts,” he said.
