Flautist Rebecca Griffiths of Milford Haven gave a virtuoso performance at Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan on Saturday night to win the 2008 Young Musician of Dyfed competition.
Rebecca, aged 17, who was accompanied by Dr Stuart Evans, is the third Pembrokeshire winner of the prestigious contest in four years.
Second place went to 12-year-old violinist Catrin Ann Rees of Llandovery, with euphonium player Huw Llyr Evans, aged 15, of Aberystwyth third.
The other two finalists were Litona Harries of Broadmoor, Kilgetty, who played the bassoon, and Ciona Smith of Pontyberem, on the viola.
The adjudicators were Leslie Craven, who is principal clarinet with the Welsh National Opera; J. Glynne Evans, previous head of music at Aberystwyth, and a previous winner of the competition, pianist Jocelyn Freeman of St Davids.
The 2005 competition winner, Lee Mottram of Pembroke, helped by assisting accompanists and the 2007 winner, Llywelyn Jones, played harp for patrons in the interval.
Dot Griew, chair of the Young Musicians of Dyfed, which runs the competition, said: "All the competitors showed wonderful potential and were praised by the adjudicators."
She also thanked the previous winners for their continued involvement in the event, and, on behalf of the trustees, all those who helped to make the competition possible.
"Our winners and their parents come back to this very friendly competition to help, and that is very encouraging for the younger musicians," she added.
