A classical music star of the future could be taking to the stage of Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan tonight (Saturday), as the theatre plays host to the final of the 2008 Young Musician of Dyfed competition.
Previous local winners of the prestigious event include Royal harpist Claire Jones, of Crymych; clarinettist Lee Mottram from Pembroke, who was this year’s blue riband winner at the national eisteddfod, and concert pianist Jocelyn Freeman, of St Davids.
Jocelyn, who also went on to win the blue riband at the eisteddfod, makes a return to the contest this year as one of the judges, alongside Leslie Craven, who is the principal clarinettist with the Welsh National Opera and J. Glynne Evans, who was previously head of music at Aberystwyth.
Young people from Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion will take part in the competition, playing pieces from Bellini to Gershwin and Bartok to Rachmaninoff.
Everyone is welcome to support the contestants during the day round which takes place from 9.30am to 4pm, when admission is free; or at the evening concert at 7.30pm where admission is £8 for adults (concessions £7), and £1 for children.
