Dear Editor
Thousands of pounds of public money was spent on the Dale Road cycle track in Hakin and Hubberston.
When I was canvassing in May’s county council elections, this was one of the issues raised by residents.
They wanted to know how much the unused cycle track cost and, guessing the price tag would be hefty, wasn’t it a complete waste of their money?
Having asked the questions during the last meeting of Pembrokeshire County Council, the answers have to be yes and yes. At just over half a mile, the bill for the track came to £93,000, which works out at £90 a yard.
Councillor Jamie Adams, cabinet member for highways, brushed aside my concerns about the cost, saying European objective one money was used.
So that’s alright then! Except that the UK contributes £5billion to the EU, so we’re all European taxpayers now.
Cllr Adams has praised the track as aiding “inclusivity” for Hubberston and Hakin. Not much comfort for disabled constituents in my ward, as requests for the council to help pay for much-needed hard standing and vehicle pavement crossovers were rejected because ‘it’s against council policy’.
