Cardigan lifeboat was launched this morning (Friday), following reports of a swimmer in distress in the Teifi estuary.
A local boatman saw the swimmer struggling as he swam between Penrhyn and Gwbert and alerted the coastguards.
"The man was wearing a wetsuit but with these water temperatures and the tidal currents in the area even the strongest swimmer could get into difficulty," said a spokesman at Milford Haven coastguard HQ.
Cardigan lifeboat was launched and rescue teams from Penrhyn and Gwbert searched the coast.
The man, a 40 something holiday maker from Bath, was found by Penrhyn coast guards. He had made it ashore and was walking up the road. Coastguards picked him up and gave him suitable advice.
