Police are urging people to be on their guard after several people in Pembroke Dock have been targeted by a telephone scam.

The scam starts with a call from the "operator", asking the person who has picked up if they will accept a reverse charges call. The name of the reverse charge caller is usually a man's name like David or John.

When the person who's been called accepts the call they are put through to a pre-recorded, usually abusive, message which is then charged to their bill.

"We would like to make potential victims of these bogus reverse charge calls aware, and advise them not to accept them or they will be charged.

"They may also find the nature of the recorded message offensive and unpleasant to listen to," said a police spokesman.   "These are pre-recorded voice messages and are not aimed at any specific person. They are basically a hoax.

"Do not accept any reverse call requests via the operator unless the person requesting them confirms their identity to you.

"If hoax calls such as these are received contact BT to get the number blocked."
