Two weeks after Haverfordwest fair descended into a mudbath and work has begun to restore the Picton playing fields to their original state.

The fair was declared a "disaster" after terrible weather conditions led to the field becoming water-logged and the event closing before the grand finale of Saturday.

As they tried to evacuate the boggy field, fair vehicles became bogged down in the mud and had to be winched out by larger vehicles, churning the ground up so much that, according to one local resident, it resembled a "ploughed field".

Pembrokeshire County Council confirmed today (Monday) that they have appointed a contractor to rectify the damage.

JL Drilling Direct, an agricultural contractor based in Landers Hook, Haverfordwest has been given the job of restoring the fields.

A county council spokesman said that the field had been levelled on Sunday and four acres' worth of grass seed applied.

""Because the ground is so wet nothing else can be done at the moment," said the spokesman. "More work to rejuvenate the fields is expected to take place in the spring."

The spokesman confirmed that the cost of the repairs would be covered by the Showmen's Guild, the money would be taken from a bond paid to the council, with any amount over and above that billed to the guild.
