Milford Haven will play host to one of the most advanced warships in the British fleet this weekend, as HMS Middleton sails into the Haven.
The 60 metre, hunt class, mine countermeasures vessel arrives in Milford Haven port tomorrow (Saturday) when she will host an onboard reception for guests.
HMS Middleton was built 1983, she is capable of both mine sweeping and mine hunting operations and has a hull and superstructure built entirely of GLP (glass reinforced plastic) to minimise threat from magnetic mines.
She is able to counter all types of modern mine using acoustic and magnetic sweeps, hull mounted sonars, remote controlled mini submarines and a team of mine clearance divers.
On Sunday commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander M G Thompson, will invite local dignitaries aboard for lunch and a tour of the ship.
Then from 2pm until 4pm on Sunday the ship will be open to the general public, giving them the opportunity to meet the crew and find out what life is like aboard a warship.
"I am delighted to have the opportunity to bring HMS Middleton into Milford Haven," said Lt Comm Thompson.
"The ship enjoys excellent links with the area and it will allow my crew to share their experiences of life at sea with a wide variety of visitors."
