A natural phenomenon in Pembrokeshire has inspired a group of artists to develop a free performance event, showcased in Abercych village hall, tomorrow (Saturday).

Pembrokeshire based Ointment artists' collective have been inspired by the story of the Milford Swallows. A small group of birds who, instead of flying south for the winter last year, wintered in the Chevron refinery on the Milford Haven waterway.

Employees became aware of the birds, helped to protect their roosts, and the birds appeared to survive the winter.

Ornithologists are asking if this could be a sign of a new migration pattern, possibly caused by global climate change. Similar changes in migration are being found in the blackcap, also known as the northern nightingale. The bird has always been a summer visitor to the UK but birds from Germany and north-east Europe are increasingly wintering in the UK as well.

Through field research and collaboration with ornithologists, the artists from ointment will explore a local phenomenon in relation to its global context, looking at the context of this story, and responding to the ideas and sensations it generates.

Tomorrow's free performance, with musician and composer Ceri Rhys Matthews and visual artist Ben Stammers, starts at 4pm.

The artists' performances will be followed by a supper and from 6pm onwards there will be a public discussion with artists and ornithologists.
