A young cetacean expert was the "star of the show" recently, when he shared the stage with TV wildlife expert Iolo Williams.

Stephen Lucas, from Fishguard, represented local conservation charity Sea Trust, and gave members of the 100 strong audience at Carmarthen's Halliwell Centre an informative and entertaining presentation on whales and dolphins in Pembrokeshire and the work of the charity.

After Stephen's support act Iolo followed with a presentation on sea birds of Wales.

Stephen, a student on Pembrokeshire College's bridging course also sat on the experts panel with Iolo and Sea Trust's Cliff Benson, answering questions on dolphins, whales and sea turtles in Welsh waters.

Stephen, aged 21, has been researching marine mammals since he was ten-years-old. He has been a volunteer with Sea Trust for the last five years.

"When Cliff asked me to do the presentation I said 'yes' straight away," he said. "I wasn't nervous beforehand. I felt excellent.

"I've met Iolo before, he's good. He's very interested in birds and wildlife."

Cliff Benson was very impressed with Stephen's performance.

"Stephen is extremely knowledgeable," he said. "He was the star of the show, Iolo and I were knocked into second and third place.

"He's done the presentation at college before, but never in front of an audience of 100 strangers, he loved it. He was the show stopper without doubt."

The event called Patagonia or Bust sponsored by Stena Line and raised over £700 for Mencap Cymru and the Welsh Wildlife Trust.

Sea Trust, along with Stena Line, hopes to run a similar event in Pembrokeshire in the New Year, promoting the work of young conservationists. Stephen is happy to give talks to local groups and schools, for further details please contact info@seatrust.org.uk .
