A recently refurbished Youth Hostel Association (YHA) property on an idyllic clifftop setting near Goodwick has been granted a new premises licence by the County Council despite a number of local objections.

Residents living close to Castell Mawr YHA in Pwll Deri, Trefasser had raised concerns about public nuisance caused by noise.

However, a representative for the YHA said that the new license would cover activities, such as watching DVDs or playing a guitar, which already take place but since the changes to the Licensing Act in 2005 required a license.

Lawyer, Joanna Cochrane from Flint Bishop in Derby, where YHA has its head office told the licensing sub-committee on Tuesday, October 14th that the YHA is applying for the licenses across its estates but it was not the intention to change the operation of the hostel.

“This is a peaceful and tranquil area and it is not in the interest of the youth hostel to change that” Mrs Cochrane added.

The owner of three cottages within sight of Castell Mawr, two of which are holiday lets, Catherine Kurtz spoke on behalf her family, business and local residents.

She said: “Due to the proximity the noise that will emanate from the youth hostel will impair our quality of life. This license would cause potential anti social behaviour in this peaceful, restful area.”

The youth hostel now has a licence to allow music and entertainment until 11pm and provide 12 pre-booked events a year until midnight, when seven days notice is given. The number of people allowed on the premises is 50 for special events, including staff.
