An audience at the Theatr Gwaun, Fishguard, will have the chance to pick its favourite from ten prize-winning plays, in an innovative scriptwriting competition tonight (Saturday).

Around 120 scripts were submitted to this year’s Pint Sized Play competition.

The rules stated that plays could be on any subject but should be no more than ten minutes long and suitable for performance in a pub.

The entries were judged by Phil Clark, former artistic director of Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre.

His choice of six winning plays and four runners-up were premiered at pubs in Tenby, Fishguard and Goodwick.

Some people came to the pub especially to see the plays while other regulars were surprised to find live drama being served up with their pint.

“I wouldn’t usually go out for a drink on a Monday night,” said one of the audience at the Rose and Crown Goodwick, “but I’m really glad that I did. It was something really different, plays that made you laugh or cry within the space of ten minutes, performed in a really intimate setting.”

Other feedback handed into the event’s organisers was equally enthusiastic.

“Great fun,” wrote one audience member. “A lovely change from loud canned music; live people and laughter!”

After the performance of all ten plays at Theatr Gwaun tonight, the audience will get the chance to vote for its favourite.

The winning author will receive a pint pot trophy and the runner-up a half pint trophy.
